Glycemic Index, everything considered... we had one hell of a debate backstage about using yams and baked potatos. I heard some experienced fellas state that yams are always the way to go, and I just didn't understand the difference. I have had clients have excellent experiences with both. I did some research and can't find any substantial difference....so with all this in mind no matter how much experience I have it is good to ask others for help. Any advise or is this thread ridiculous and were we making a big deal out of nothing??????????

GI is an outdated hack. Both are good sources of glucose polymers. Either is fine.

cool...

that is what I told the fellas... I mean it was a HEATED discussion... it started with the carb up phase and then went into all sorts of stuff....

thanks.....

:hehe:

If it's for normal starchy carbs, go with the yams as they're higher in vitamins. If it's a PWO meal, go for the potato as they are more suited for a PWO meal (higher GI/quicker digesting mainly).

In a mixed-meal, GI is pretty meaningless.

Digestion is another thing though - are potatoes more easily digested than sweet potatoes?

I don't have any studies to back up my claims. I am going purely off of reading I have done by Tom Venuto who is far smarter than I will ever be when it comes to dieting and training ;)

Try reading Lyle McDonald.

:D

It's definitely interesting. I'm 3 chapters into UD 2.0 and he has already basically said "that diet you're following? yea, it's a waste of time."

Whether this stuff is all true or not I don't know, but it is ripping apart a lot of what I thought I knew about dieting.

"this stuff" - you mean UD2.0?

McDonald writes what is the state of the art with regard to body recomposition.

Right. I'm just saying that it completely destroyed what I thought I knew about dieting. At the basic level it's still calories in versus calories out, but using his reasoning it's actually kind of obvious why I have never been able to break into single digit levels yet. I'm still dieting like I'm fat, and that just won't work for trying to get to the level I want to get to.

There you go.

It's different when you're lean. That's why the last bit is "so hard to lose" - it's impossible to lose using the same methodology you used for the first fat you dropped. The environment changes and you have to change your approach.

Yams are slightly higher in mineral content and are a good source of beta cerotene.

But other than that they're the same, and I like both so I eat both, but either one is fine.

Thanks

Thanks.... I told the guys that in general unless I have to research, I eat both.. but overall they said if you like the tams better that is the better choice... thanks for the info though i didn't know if I had missed something these past million years or what...lol... but hey it is always good to bounce something off of others...

take care

Yeah, really.

I don't get why people make a big deal out of GIs.

Who eats a baked potato all by itself?
