Is this a safe exercise? Does it force the shoulder into a position that is too unnatural?

Thanks for any advice!

safe yes. personally I think the ROM sucks

I like to do them on a smith machine, because I find it hard to hold the weight behind me.

I think they are....ROM is limited, but I like to fry my traps with them as a last exercise

I hurt just thinking about them. Not for me personally.

Oh I love these!! Kind of have to do a half shrug/upright row to make it really effective. Nothing hits the rear/middle traps better! These are also great supersetted with regular uprights or regular shrugs.

So, are not worth doing then?
I think there worth doing for the fact its a different angle. I wouldnt go as heavy in behinds then i would normally shrug.

my butt is too big to do 'em.

First time i saw these was on Lee Haney's video.

they work great :thumb:

I used to do them but my butt got in the way

DD, whose quote is that in your signature? Is that yours or someone elses? I like it.

Ya, I save rear shrugs for last, too. I do 3 sets of dumbell, 2 front barbell, then 2 rear barbell. The ROM is pretty limited, but you will learn the best way to get the most out of it quick enough. I don't think I would be able to do them at all without straps, though.

when i go heavy i use straps every time, I couldn't get the same workout if I didn't

I think they're okay. I personally prefer DB shrugs, either seated or standing. But that's just me. :)

Well, the behind the back shrugs hit a different part of the muscle than DB shrugs. BTBS really bring out the lower trap area in the mid back.

Oh geez, I don't remember. It was from a leading doctor involved in neurology...I guess I took the quote down and forgot to include the source. I thought the entire time that I had it after the quote. I'll look it up for you.

I like them too but the butt does get in the way. Is there a way around this annoyance?

the lower traps depress the scapula. the upper traps raise it. I don't think I understand what you are saying? Unless I am misreading your reply.

The BTBS brings out thickness in the mid back area....this is the mid, not lower traps (I was being a bit too broad in my last description), and the rhomboids. They also bring out the traps in the upper area where they "sit" on top of the scapula area of the back.

I enjoy them, If you use a Smith Machine & lean forward a bit you won thit yer butt...
