I've had a natural 8pak from 15-40yrs old. I've also had a chest(natural and at times enhanced) that overhangs the 8pak. Granted I live in the Northwest and for the most part the shirt is on. Over the years I've had FAR more comments about the chest from ladies.

Now I finally have a gut to some degree. My theory is that so long as the chest hangs out over the gut you are GOLDEN (so long as the shirt is on).

: )

I agree with this statement totally. As I have gained weight over the past two years, I have seen my waist measurement go up from 33 inches to close to 38 (at its biggest). However, my chest had also gone up to 48 inches at its biggest. I maintain the 10 inch rule, if your chest is 10 inches bigger than your waist, you are in proportion and OK. Of course, this does look better when you are wearing a shirt, but it doesn't look bad shirtless either, just no abs.

I voted for the 405 bench, not cause I don't want abs, but I just don't think it's all that important to a guy in my situation. Frankly I am pretty cut all over except for my midsection, and I guess that goes with the territory of being 33 years old and not doing any cardio really.

Yes, I think it requires a lot more work to get abs than to bench 405, but I think it's more discipline type work than hard work. I am just a little bitch with no willpower, so I choose mechanical hard work and I WILL bench 405 before this year ends, that is a promise to all my fans out there :D

6pk beacause 405 would rip my arms out of socket and im about 10lbs from that right now

Maybe if you already have a big bench. But if you're at benching 250, there's a lot further to go.

To clarify, does having the 405 bench mean you can never achieve a six pack?

I guess I'll be the first to flat out admit I care far more about aestetics than having big numbers. I've always been able to put up more weight than I look, and I'm relatively happy with the way I look. Being able to bench 405 doesn't help me out any more than being able to bench 250. And most girls are attracted to abs.

Now if the question were would you rather gain twenty pounds of muscle over night or have a six pack now, I may be inclined to rethink my answer.

I could bench close to 405 toward the end of my last cycle. I still wasn't satisfied with how my body looked, so now I gave up on high numbers for my 4th attempt to diet down to where I have a 6 pack. Benching 405 is great for in the gym, but when the cloths come off for sex, or your at the beach without a shirt, a 6 pack is better.

I agree with the shirt overhang to a degree. For somebody with a normal body composition, this is true, but in my case it is not. My rip cage and lungs are about twice as big as most people's. Even when I wasn't benching much, I still looked like I had a bodybuilders chest. I think it throws me out of proportion, and wish I had a smaller skeletal frame. I can almost see a 4 pack, right now, but I am still a 39 in the waist, so it makes me look fat even when I am shredded.

What can I say? Just do the best you can the genetics you have. I'm not complaining, because I am very happy with my body overall, but I know many of us put ourselves under a microscope. If we didn't, there wouldn't be so many people on this board who look super human.

My shirt

405 impresses, umm, dudes at the gym. 6 pack was sure getting the ladies attention at the beach last weekend for me, 8 pack will be even better. ultimate goal is an 8 pack at about 205lbs, as i weigh about 195ish now at 6'2. just thin king about the size i'd put on to get to 405, i'd literally have to spend about $20,000 to replace my wardrobe...for what benefit?

Trust me, youre not alone. Thats why I havent even voted yet. I know both paths require a lot of work.

I think its one of those Grass is Greener on the other side things. Once you get 1, you want the other.

I believe that size and strength are related but not a means to an end. However, someone that does 405 isnt going to be small nor non-threatening. Someone that does that will look like a man and not some pretty boy. And if M.J.H. tries this shit out, he has to do 405 with PROPER FORM before any credit is given. :paddle:

Now, I think it was Double that said what if you have to put on so much weight to bench that..? Well, being fat is one thing, but 405, impressive and hard to achieve it maybe, its still possible. I mean, those powerlifters that are huge, but have a large BF% arent maxing out on 405, believe me. Theyre repping that shit.

see, this really is also a loaded question, cause you answer it based on your situation as well. For instance, if I were single and needed to "impress" the ladies so to speak, I might be more interested in a six pack cause that's what they see, they could care less if you could bench press 8 plates. Now, where I am now, being 32 almost 33, married with a 9 month old, I am more interested in being big and strong so no one fucks with them , moreso than how I look in a bathing suit. OK sure it would be nice to have chicks look at me and stare, but really, what for, what can I do about it? nothing. So I choose to be a strong bastard.

That's so true.

ive got the six pack and i bench 275. im not willing to give up the 6 pack for the type of increase needed for 405. i still want to gain about 10-15 lbs but i dont think ill ever need or want to bench 405.

You can keep the 405 bench. I'll take the 6 pack of beer. :D

I would like to bench 405 more. How many people around you can really say they can bench 405lbs? A lot of people have six packs. I would love to know that I can bench 405.

This is the gayest thread of the week. Congrats!

That was only the gayest post of the year. Typically a lot gayer then you usually post.

We have just come to accept the gay in everyone of your posts.

I've actually got to poop right now. Can I change my vote for the next five minutes?
That reminds me.. I got off work late last night, with only an hour before the gym was to close and before leaving for my workout, I ate and then had to poop. Thing was, it was leg day. So I forced it out before leaving to the gym and had to rush my workout. Don't you hate it when that happens?

As long as it doesn't happen WHILE you are squatting :mooh:

I am in the married variety, but I still wanna look good. I dont wanna be a fatty and bench 405. I find it lots more impressive to bench 330 and hae abs, then 405 and have a pot belly.....

Agreed. Its not a certainty however. You dont have to be a lard ass to push up 405. You COULD have a 6-pack and do 405, but its completely hard and frankly, just shoudlnt be discussed cuz everyone would want it and that doesnt generate conversation.

I was also thinking on what situation a person is in to determine that. Obviously, someone that is training for numbers or even for size, isnt going to care about losing a six pack. Contrary, a person who is cutting (not necessarily going for a six pack, but maybe a weight of BF % as a goal) doesnt care about high bench numbers.

Were taking a person, whos been working out for sometime, has sufficient deit knowledge to accomplish both tasks, has training knowledge to accomplish both tasks, completely natural, and awaiting a decision...what does this person choose? :flex: :lifter:

Mariusz can bench that and look at him.

so I would have to choose both

visible 6 pack for me, I lift more for the visual improvement, the gained strength is just a bonus

Considering my goals in the long term aren't to be large enough where I could be benching 405, I'll take the 6 pack.
