blood pressure help

I'm posting this with hopes of someone giving some advice or input.

I'm 27 year old male and I have high blood pressure. The blood pressure is actually very erratic, it ranges anywhere from 120/80 to 160/110 depending on what I'm doing. For instance, when I'm walking around it can be 140/100, but after ten minutes of sitting down and resting it can read 125/85. I've been to many doctors including a cardiologist. Had many tests done, probably more heart work than 80 year old grandpa, lol. All tests came back fine. Diagnosis: high bp without a cause. My blood pressure problems started with my anxiety problems and the blood pressure seems to be elevated with stress. I feel that I got my anxiety more or less under control, but the blood pressure is still high. I don't want to be on blood pressure meds at the age of 27. I'm 6.1, 220, could stand to loose 10 lbs, otherwise healthy. I'm worried about lifting in the gym as I noticed that my blood pressure is already 140/90+ just by moving around.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I found a post where back in 2006, when a user named Trouble helped a guy out with his pb issue. I'm hoping you are still around Trouble to help me as well.

I have a genetic issue with both blood pressure and cholesterol. Doc first noticed in my late teens, and I have tried most of the ways to lower my numbers, with little success. A few years ago I decided to throw in the towel and go on the medications he suggested. It has worked well for me. There are a few side effects, but my body adjusted, and I have few problems with any side-effects these days. I am not suggesting you should rush out and get on medication, only that it did work well for me. I tried everything else possible first, and after all these efforts I concluded, along with my doctor, that rx meds were the only way to go. By the way, my blood pressure #'s can vary widely as well. Much of this also depends on your insurance, because without good coverage many of these drugs can be very expensive. Just thought I'd relate my own personal experience, so take it for what it is. I do think that meds should be the last resort, and everything should be done to avoid them if at all possible. Weight issues and diet along with the lack of exercise are often responsible for these problems, but in my particular case, did nothing to change things for the better. Good luck, and I hope you are able to find a solution that works for you.

Excellent advice, but do remember that if it is genetic, nothing works other than medication. Sometimes, it is the only viable alternative. Hopefully in your case, you will be able to find another solution, because meds are for life. Good luck, and I hope things improve for you.
 
You need to look into your food you eat and also Meditation will help you a lot. I have seen a lot of people gaining help due to meditations. Also medication is very much needed in this case.

it is abvious that in high pressure man being high tempered.
one should avoid spicy food.and also try to control anger.
 
MDR: what type of genetic high blood pressure do you have?

Meditation (already mentoined) is a great idea.
Anxiolytic herbs - chamomille, valerian, passionflower, white tea
Talk to a naturopathic doctor, taking pharmaceuticals generally never addresses your real issue

And the real cause of your anxiety needs to be fixed as well. The medications and herbs will just mask what's going on deep inside.
 
My BP used to hover around 150/95 and go as high as 170/100 at times. I quit drinking alcohol and cut out salt, and even stopped eating beef & pork for over a month and it still wouldn't get below around 150/90. Ironically, my cholesterol has never been high. I finally just bit the bullet and started on BP med. You prolly need to do the same.

Don't discount the impact of white coat hypertension.

Especially if you're worried about it, the very act of going to get your BP checked can stress you out and drive it up. 140/100 isn't TERRIBLE - you are barely on the lower limit of stage one hypertension, and you said yourself when you sit down and relax it goes down. Hypertension is a high RESTING BP, not a transient increase.

Now i'm not a doctor, im just some guy doing a biomedical sciences degree, but your BP doesn't look too scary. Blood pressure fluctuates during the day quite a lot - when weight training even a non-hypertensive person's ABP can rise to ridiculous levels for a short period of time.

Try and reduce salt and saturated fat intake, start doing low intensity exercise (even walking 10,000 steps a day has shown a marked decrease of BP and other CHD risk factors like cholesterol), and try and improve your fruit and vegetable intakes. General healthy eating and low intensity activity (not exercise - activity) is great for lowering BP.

But most of all, just fucking relax. A high BP doesn't work like a water system - you wont blow a coupling and have blood shooting out of your ears. Its a chronic condition that presents with chronic problems. You're still young. You can still change your diet and activity levels to improve your health.

You sure as shit don't need meds IMO. You'll be on them for life.

Keep going to your doc for checks, but relax a bit more when you're in the chair.

Google the DASH diet - specifically designed to reduce BP.
 
I was diagnosed with high blood pressure several years ago. I did some research and found that salt and stress can raise blood pressure reading. My stress level was cut by:

1. Learning to say the word, "NO!"
2. Making some VERY difficult decisions which I'd put off for way to long.
3. Making a daily effort to live "in the moment" and not worry about the future.

I loved salty food. But once I started reading food labels, I was SHOCKED at how much salt is in prepared foods. Breads, canned beans, tomato sauce, etc. all contain a LOT of salt. Drastically cutting salt consumption was done by:

1. Nearly eliminating fast food, junk food and most commercially processed foods. Read the labels on everything you eat
2. Removing the salt shaker from the kitchen table.

Within a few weeks my blood pressure was fairly consistently at 120/80 or less. These steps also started my weight loss and subsequent fitness improvement.

Today, I can eat a moderate amount of salt and it doesn't seem to affect my blood pressure. Might be due to the weight loss and exercise.

These ideas may not work for everyone, but considering the side effects of blood pressure meds, it's worth trying!
 
What kind of side effects are involved with bp meds? I have high bp also, does the meds affect training? ( for anyone taking the meds)

very good post! def hold off on any meds for now,it is not that out of control yet.

only thing I would add is buy some co-q10 and hawthorne berry along with a high q uality fish oil and take that every day and see where you are at in 30-50 days.

I would start with the advice in the post above though!

this is really one tough disease. I have read articles about this and this really is not easy, and according to some of i know that has this, there are lots of foods that is not allowed for people who has high blood pressure.

by the way, does anyone here knows what causes this high blood?
