hi,

i'm after some advice on what to have for breakfast. i'm trying to lose a few pounds (but basically not put any on! i have a large build but i'm not fat) and to get a 'better' physique.
i've never tried whey protein before and have heard it's the way forward.
i always have a normal cereal for breakfast and would like to keep to that, as i can't stomach meat/eggs that early! i was thinking about having a bowl of cereal and a shake (need advice on what whey protein to use!) made from whey protein, milk and bananas - like a banana shake, i can manage that in the morning!
then have a normal lunch, salad with meat.
workout followed by another shake and dinner- pasta?
i'm also taking creatine caps and hydroxycut hardcore
thanks for any advice,
paul

Whey protein is good 1st thing in the morning as it digests faster. Casein is good also, but that digests slower, so thats better to take before bed. They come in many flavors or as you brits say flavours. So you can choose your fav.
I don't like to eat very heavy in the mornings either, it slows me down, so I'll just stick with oatmeal w protein powder, just to jazz it up a little.:thumb:

do you mix your protein powder in with your oatmeal? :hmmm:

Yeah, not a whole serving though, it'll get to thick & lumpy. About a 1/4 scoop just to jazz it up a little, helps with the flavor, usually chocolate. Sometimes I'll add fruit along with that. gives it a little life, plain oats are just so boring!

A banana is one of the best things for you in the morning since it contains fructose which will stop the muscle breakdown from your night of sleep and give you energy. A banana also goes great in a blender, so mix this with the protein of your choice and whatever else you want (blue berries, peanut butter, rasberries, etc) for the perfect morning shake to get you going. Just make sure to get some protein first thing in the morning AND get some water in your system too - sleeping all night will deplete your system so get yourself a big glass upon waking up.

hi,

i was thinking about having a bowl of cereal and a shake (need advice on what whey protein to use!)

What kind of protein are you using now? A lot of protein is pretty similar in ingredients and usage...the main thing I make my decision on is price and taste. Labrada's proteins taste pretty good...ON tastes ok as well. BSN make very good tasting ones but they are expensive. Stay away from Nitrotech - they are expensive and don't taste very good at all!

cheers for the advice. im not using any whey protein currently. should i have:

bowl of cereal
shake - whey protein, milk & bananas
large glass of water

or as above but skip the cereal?
whats best? do i need carbs in the morning?

Are you, in fact, hungry in the morning? And no, you do NOT need carbs in the AM!

nope, i'm just not hungry when i wake up. i work funny shifts at work so im out of bed either 4am or 11am, both times i have to force food down if i want to eat. otherwise i wait a few hours and have lunch.
i know i have to eat asap after waking though

No you don't. Skip it. I do.

Eat a substantial meal when you're ready.

I think that's really good advice. I think that people get too locked into these "cookie-cutter" diets; eating when they're not hungry/not eating enough when they ARE hungry because they're so focused on getting their "six meals a day, every three hours." I think a big part of any successful diet plan is being an intuitive eater. Arrange your training conveniently around your schedule, and eat appropriately; LISTEN to your body, feed it when it's hungry and don't stuff it when it's not.

For me though, not eating breakfast wouldn't work...I'm always very hungry in the mornings!

Really? You seem to have a very substantial knowledge about diet so I'm not questioning you, but I find it hard to believe that you don't need something first thing in the morning - maybe not a full meal, but a piece of fruit? A small package of oatmeal? A rice cake? Something?

Please elaborate if you don't mind.

A rice cake would be exactly what I personally would NOT want. It turns into glucose so fast it's crazy - and I hardly want an insulin response first thing in the morning - I'd be hungry all day! (If I trained in the AM, this would be a different story, okay, but I don't, I train at night and I work at a desk job).

Let's put this another way, h-town. Why would it matter that I shoved something down my throat first thing when I'm not hungry?

This is how my day goes:
wake up, shit shower and shave, drive to work.
Sit at a computer, read emails, get my plan going for the day.
Make a cup of tea, put my first meal together: half a tin of tuna, about 3/4 cup cottage cheese, half an avocado, fish oil caps.
Lunch: salad, the rest of the avocado, chicken, fruit, olive oil and vinegar
Coffee: whatever meat is left over from lunch, veggies, butter
Preworkout: fruit, cottage cheese, a few nuts
Train
Postworkout: white rice or potatoes, meat
Sometime before I fall asleep: the remainder of my calories for the day, usually cottage cheese and maybe a little fruit at bedtime.

So you tell me - and I'm not being a bitch here, I'm just playing devil's advocate - is my body REALLY going to have a nervous breakdown because I ate at midnight, slept, got up at seven, sat on my ass and didn't eat until ten instead of rolling out of bed and forcing in food even though I'm not yet hungry?

i don't usually eat FIRST THING... i'll have a coffee first and then i'll usually eat about an hour after or so after that, but i've always heard that you essentially want to feed your body asap upon waking from 8 hours with no food... i've heard when you skip breakfast your metabolism starts to slow down? or you'll be more likely to eat twice as much in one sitting later... i agree with what was said above though that it makes sense to feed your body when it's hungry and don't force feed yourself when you're not...

I think what is being conveyed, and correct me if I'm wrong. But, what may work for an individual, may not work for all. We're all different man, woman, Ecto, Endo, Mezomorph. As everything in life we have to find what works for us as an individual, and stick with it. Right?:hiya:

The "starvation response" takes longer to kick in than a few hours in the AM
or you'll be more likely to eat twice as much in one sitting later...
Which is perfectly fine, if your day's totals add up to where they should.

Bingo.

Mmm... more to the point, there's no physiological reason why you HAVE to eat first thing in the AM, or why you have to eat carbs in the AM, or why you have to eat every x hours etc etc. So long as your daily macros and calories are in line with your physique goals, the only "feeding time" that's really going to matter is periworkout.

(*Disclaimer*: I'm not talking about specific diets here, like Atkins or PSMF or UD2.0 which are designed around specific macronutrients and timing, okay? I'm just talking about so called "normal" bulking, cutting or maintenance diets for us bodybuilding-type peeps)

Very knowledgeable Built! I guess that's why you have that 6-pack:heartpump As the saying goes, "well done is better than well said".:thumb:

LOL - well, thanks. Honestly, the "six" happened because I have the genetics for it and because I figured out a way to undereat and not mind too much while I kept up with my lifting.

(The "striated ass" DIDN'T happen because there's a limit to how much starving I'm willing to do. ;) )

Peace.

I'd settle for a 6 pack like that, thanks very much :D

As for breakfast, I'm usually starving 10-15min after waking up. It's not uncommon for my stomach to actually hurt while I'm in the shower from being so hungry (shower then breakfast).

Even if I'm not hungry I will still eat because I know if I don't, by 9:30-10AM I will be tearing into any piece of food I can find healthy or not.

The moral of the story is try it both ways and see what works for YOU.
