Do you guys eat frozen or fresh brocolli? Is there any diff?
I usually eat fresh- but it can be a pain...How are the frozen ones? I read the bag and it says 2 gram sugar??! for one cup..
 
Fresh is always better than frozen, it loses some of its nutritional properties when its frozen. I eat only fresh veggies. Cut up a whole bunch of broccoli and throw it in my steamer for 12 min. and voila steamed broco. Ummmmmmmm.
 
I nuke it because I'm an impatient person. I have to buy fresh because I don't have a freezer, plus I find it tastes a lot better.
 
Steamer is better cause it doesnt have to sit in water, which loses nutrients.
 
I buy frozen veggies. But mine doesn't have any sugar in them. I don't boil my frozen veggies either. I just put it in a bowl and nuke it. I don't add water either. I only buy the florets but it comes out green and crunchy. Tastes just like steamed to me.
 
BLECH...I just ate my frozen or I should say MUSHY brocolli.
Guess I overcooked it...OOPS. Mochy I will try to nuke it since, I too, like it it crunchy...Brocolli that is!

As for the sugar, I am perplexed. The only ingredient is Brocolli. Perhaps it is a natural sugar.. Some bags said 1g others had 2-3 grams.
 
I eat it fresh, frozen, steamed, fried....however it's served. Broccolis is broccolis. My favorite is steamed though.
 
Sometimes they add sugar because frozen broccoli cansometimes taste bitter. It is also a mild preservative. Only nuke the frozen for about 2min.
 
I read an article once that there is a certain chemical in brocolli that causes some people (depending on genetics) to think it tastes disgusting...hence the reason you either like it or hate it. Anyone else ever heard of this?

Yes its called brocoitis and it causes the broccoli flowers to expand once it hits there mouths. Hence why it tastes so bad. My friends brothers fiances sister has it and she has to take pills for it.

YUK! Thats why I don't boil it. Mushy broccoli is disgusting. Definately try just nuking it without any additional water. comes out great.

this is gonna sounda bit wierd but hey iam a college student on the run. I usuely cook all of my food up for the day and put it in plastic containers. I then usuely put frozen broccoli over my chicken breast etc. Its great it keeps my food cold and when you get to eating it, it is crunchy. Just thought I would throw that one out there
 
I may sound wierd too, but I kind of like my broccoli mushy. I mean, it really doesn't matter to me, I guess it just depends on how I feel. Sometimes I'm really into eating crunchy veggies, and other times I like them mushy. It's kind of the same way with cereal. I would eat it, and was stoked at first cuz it'd be all crunchy, but by the time I was done, it would be all soggy. but I liked that too. I dunno, hard to explain. Can anyone relate?
 
Eww, I can???t stand broccoli. My mom likes it and she is always behind me to eat it b/c it???s healthy bla bla bla but I just cant stand it. It???s awful.
 
Thats because you have broccoitis Kat man. See i told you there is such a thing.
 
LOL, I prefer fresh, but usually buy frozen. I don't have broccolitis, but I do have brusselsproutius hateus. I think I'd rather swing on a gallows pole than eat brussel sprouts.

Eat them, or swing? "Where's the rope?"

I normally steam it, but will on occasion boil it. I NEVER nuke anything. Call me a kook, but I've seen enough reports on what microwaves do to the molecular structure of food, that we got rid of ours.

I eat frozen BABY BROCOLI...It is more tender, and not as bitter...Just a side note...I have been living in the islands (GUAM and HAWAII) for a few years now, and although it is tropical veggies and such have to be flown in...I have not really eaten a lot of FRESH produce in that time, and did become concerned, but the consensus that I found was this....Frozen actually retains more nutrients then fresh, because as soon as produce is picked it starts to depleat in nutrients at that moment...It is shipped(sometimes by plane) and then by truck to the store, and sits on the shelf for a few days, and that is before you get it home...Vit C drops early on along with other nutrients....Frozen retains the vits more I guess because it is picked and taken for a deep freeze right away...So really from what I have read, frozen is sometimes BETTER than fresh...At least out here in the islands, and more than likely in the winter time out your way( I used to live in Lancaster PA by the way, and Bethasda is a cool town) Fresh off the farm(like from the Amish:) is more than likely best, but how many of use get it as fresh as that???

Produce out here SUCKS, I have not had a good peach in YEARS...and pineapple(I live right across from the dole pineapple fields) taste the same, fresh or not...:(

I digress, try baby brocoli leslie...

Danilee,I see your delima about fresh and frozen and do agree with your xplanation!!!Makes sense.
But,I just go outside in my backyard and pick a few bunchs right outta my garden and in the steamer they go,just to get them Hot!!

Well you have to down a couple pounds of raw broccoli with 2 tablespoons of flax plus and orange and then your cured.

Thanks Danilee;) I guess there are a few small drawbacks of living on an island....Amish brocolli, not feasible, but probably tastes yummy...as all of the Amish products do.

This is true....however, if you cook the veggies for too long they lose nutrients as well...keep the cooking time short. :D
 
I usually have frozen brocoli (for the convenience), but I generally don't cook it. When I'm packing meals in the morning, I just put in a couple of servings of frozen brocoli, and it thaws out by the time I'm ready for it.
