OK, do we really have to keep track on the type of carbs we eat base on their GI? Cause quite frankly I'm kinda sick of eating those 'quality' carbs anymore like brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potato, etc and the moment I think of having to combine them with the typical tasteless chicken breast just makes me dull.

So do we really have to stick with those quality carbs and try not to consume tastier, but so-call 'less effective' carbs like white rice, white bread, white potatoes, etc? Or can a person gain equally impressive results regardless of what kinda carbs he eat as long as he controls the fat intake?

Sky...you raise an interesting question here...

First of all, remember that the GI is based on carbs when eaten ALONE, not combined with protein and/or fats, which will lower the GI of any carb. Also, remember that the GI was originally created for diabetics, and it is for them that the GI is most important.

So, to your question...can we make just as good of progress on any type of carb? Well, yes and no. If you are strictly trying to gain muscle mass, than yes, you can gain just fine on higher GI carbs. The GI becomes much more important for those in a cutting phase, when we need to keep insulin lower and more steady. This is where more "quality" carbs like sweet potatos, brown rice, oatmeal, etc, will produce faster results than more refined carbs. Is it impossible to get cut on higher GI carbs? No, but it will take longer and /or more effort.

One other thing to consider is health. Refined carbs usually are stripped of their vitamin/mineral content and have far less valuable fiber for gut health than their more "quality" counterparts.

So gopro, what you mean is that if a person is on a bulking phase, he can simply stick with higher GI carbs like white rice/bread/potatoes and still gain good muscles?

YUP...fine for bulking, not so good for cutting...

skyliner, the hardest thing about eating healthy all the time is "yes"it get really boring meal after meal.but in time, you learn to eat that way not for taste, but for fuel for the body.:thumb: :thumb:
