So, I have been having problems with my calf for the past week or so, and I was unable to cycle today, so instead I rowed, which didint bother it that much, although right now it is bothering me a bit but I am R.I.C.E'ing. Although I do pretty highly intense stationary cycle workouts over about an hour and a half, today I did 45 minutes of rowing instead.

The difference was, I noticed how my heart rate was high for the entire rowing session, around 145-160, for 45 minutes, as opposed to cycling for about 90 minutes, where my heart rate hovers around 120, and gets up to the 145bpm mark for 20 seconds about every 5 minutes, when I do higher intensity intervals.

My major question is: Although I calculated through online calculators and using the machines computer that when I rowed I burned 520 calories, and when I cycle I burn about 1100. Although the numbers are so far off from each other, does intensity play a big part in overall calories burned for the day, maybe due to a higher elevated metabolism, or some other factors?

Thanx in advance ofr any responses,

MiKe

you burnmore when your heart rate is higher.

the main aim of interval training is to be able to workout for a long time while elevating your heart rate regularly to burn most calories,if you do it all at high heart rate you won't be able to last long .

I hear what your saying, but its personally hard for me to keep an elevated heart rate constant, or even get my hr up high at all because I am in very good cardiovascular shape. Rowing hard gets it up there much easier than stationary cycling although due to the overall nature of rowing i.e. using your whole body as opposed to just your lower.

Intensity plays a huge part in terms of calories burned, yes.

it is because you have adpated to the stationary bike.

you have a different exercise economy on the rower, or if you were to run, or if you were to swim, etc....

exercise economy plays a big role.

Mike,

I recognize you from the running room forums, I would strongly suggest you take a look at your diet. You really need to be eating differently (from what I've seen you post there with regards to your pre-post workout nutrition, unless you've made some big changes), especially for sessions like that.

What would you suggest I do/eat different????

If I remember right you do 1.5 hours of cardio then 45 minutes of weights on an empty stomach? Then maybe (I could be wrong...) wait a while to eat even after all that?

Wow, that is a terrible idea...
