Well, I have made the decision to work with a trainer for a couple weeks to see how it goes. I don't need one because I more than know what I am doing, but I am open to new ideas and experiences, you never know if you might learn something useful.

Anyway, the other day he had me doing deadlifts, an exercise I normally really like, with a slightly different technique. At the top of the movemt, he wanted me to slightly squeeze, or move, my shoulder blades back in order to activate the midback/scapula. He said he has seen Jay Cutler use this technique, Maybe it is just me, but it seems kind of dangerous. I actually tweaked my lower back that night too, don't know if it was because of that or not. I have done deadlifts in the past by just standing straight up with a flat back and no extra arch or squeeze in the back, I thought that was bad for you.

Any thoughts on this kind of technique, anyone seen it before? And yes, I know just because Cutler does it doesn't mean it is for everyone, so there is no need to have a fit about that!:)

your shoulders should already be back from the start position, when you address the bar on the ground. You should already have retracted your shoulders. I don't understand what you are trying to do at the top of the movement.

If I were training with a trainer and they dropped a line like "I saw Jay Cutler do it." I would (a) ask for my money back and (b) never go back to them again.

Yeah your shoulders should already be back.. you have to keep your body tight through the whole movement..

Any tips on avoiding scraping your shins with the barbell during the upward phase?

Bahahaha. I agree with that statement. The only thing I would focus on at the top is getting a full gluteal contraction so that your lockout is at the hips, and you aren't hyperextending your spine in order to get into lockout position.

I agree, explain to the gym owners, what has happened and request that you get a refund from the " trainer", I bet you anything the trainers never done DL`s.
Whether your doing DL`s using the Old School Traditional form, or Sumo, once you have brought the weight up, so you are upright, the lift is over.
That tweek you felt in your lower back is not a good thing, you don`t even want to lean back 1/4", you come up, lift is over.

i think this point is exaggerated... you can still deadlift with good form keeping the bar close to your body without literally scraping it along your shins...

although i will admit i always wear pants over shorts on deadlift days...

by any chance does he mean to push your chest through at the top as in a finish position if your shoulders are forward then the lift does not count for PLing you have to push through .........................p.s. lol using jay cutler as an example some trainer lol

well i have long legs
im an ectomorph

and my physiology is very poorly setup for deadlifting

for me its less of a scraping
and more of a grinding

its going to happen , my PL trainer made me learn without long socks so he could see if i was doing it properly lol

ive bled on more than a couple occasion

and my physiology is very poorly setup for deadlifting

this is how i feel about myself with back squats... it doesn't matter how light i go it hurts my knees if i go below parallel... i feel like i have to lean too far forward to get my ass back far enough to go down low without having my knees go past my toes... so i just stick to going down to parallel... i have no problem going ass to grass with front squats though and use those for depth...

i usually just bleed everywhere

make a cloud of chalk
scream
slap the weight down

you know

the usual

i want people to know i am a true badass

:roflmao:

i just put a strip of athletic tape down mys shins

keeps them from getting cut up
and i dont actually scream.

Why the hell dont you just wear tracksuit pants? I dont know if they do them in the states but they sell a brand called canterburys over here and there great for training in.

sometimes i even cry

I do all of that plus I use a 1 inch ROM on smith machine behind the head shoulder presses and use like six plates.

i just laughed for a good hour at this... but seriously true that. i buy an extra white/dry chalk to fill the room when i clap it,and grunt mad loud so everyone will know im the man

i can't imagine being able to get a good grip on the bar when going heavy using this method

yea that picture has the guy covering the whole part he gripping. you can just anchor a little corner of the towel under you thumb. and the rest of your hand can do whatever it wants to. However i used that method a couple days ago and noticed the bar wasn't slipping out of my hand like it does usually on heavy. But anyways you can try it and see how it feels with the whole towel covering the bar and gripping over it. It might work for you, might not.

doesnt seem like i would be able to grip nearly as much weights

like
maybe half

why not just use a sissy pad like merk said

this is what i will do from now on
