I do only Sumo-style Dead's. Seems like the stiff legged Deads are the embodyment of every "don't lift this way or you'll hurt your back" type of advice I've ever heard or read...I just feel this major lower back strain doing stiff legged Deads. Anybody else find this to be the case?

use less weight

I love stiff legs. try to think of sticking your ass out as far as possible instead of lowering your upper body, this helps keep harmful tension off of my lower back.

work on your form. lower the weight.

IMO, these are two completely different excercises. Stiff leg deadlift and then regular deadlift. I personally do deadlifts with sumo stance and then stiff leg deadlifts on a 3" plank to really hit my hams and lower back.

I am still feel SLDLs in back as much as my hammys. IS that normal? I do trad style deads for my lower back (aka spinea erectae)

I think sumo's hit the back differently then conventionals as well as sldl's. Each has their place...I find I can do sldl's without hitting my low back to much. Deads are all in the hips.

I usually feel a pretty good pump in my lower back after stiff legs as opposed to my hams as well. Always have. But, I noticed the most gradual progress in my hamstrings after throwing in this excercise.
