Did you go to college?

I'm 18 now and done with high school. Everybody say "Go to college youll love it!" But most people I know drop out or was not smart enough and ended up wasting a lot of money. So I guess my question is, can u have success in life and not go to college?

Going to college and just getting that piece of paper opens a lot of doors today that would otherwise be closed if you ever want to be a professional. Plus it's a fun place to get laid constantly, drink lots of beer and party your ass off for 3-4 years while you study. I had a blast there and made some friends that I will know for life and banged chicks that I still bang occasionally.

I agree, but it would be worth taking a few classes to become aware of what is involved in becoming an entrepreneur.

It's said often and rarely followed, but if you can choose work that you enjoy, that can make you successful. Success comes in many different variations. If you're looking for monetary success, then it's either schooling or a well thought out entrepreneur plan.

Usually because they drink/party too much and don't think about their grades. It's basically immaturity and refusal to focus on a long term goal IMO. College is actually quite easy if you put a slight amount of effort into it.

If you're passionate about your work then you'll succeed even if you're an elementary school drop out.


Alot of people drop out or fail to make it because a)they partied too much, b)they really aren't excited about where they're going, c)they found they can make it on their own without an expensive degree.(Bill Gates for example)

Unless you're a natural, a talent which is readily observable w/ obvious marketability, get a college degree. If you're not ready yet for college, see the world or get a shit job that'll make you wish you'd have gone to college.

I have a BA, JD and an LLM and I wouldn't trade any of it....well, maybe the jd. Irrespective of your job prospects, college will help you develop a somewhat more sophisticated way of viewing the world and expressing yourself.

Look for an apprenticeship in some sort of trade. Alot of money in many of them and alot of demand.

most people who go stay, get a degree and love it... do you associate with anyone who went and stayed? it makes sense that you are referring to people who are back home/dropped out, of course they aren't going to have a good outlook on college. think of others who went away to school that you haven't seen in a while. chances are you don't hear from them because they're out on their own doing their own thing now. many people are simply afraid to leave their comfort zone.

in terms of success... that depends on the individual... college grad or not. you may be limited in your options w/o a degree, but success can be attained by anyone who wants it bad enough.

college isn't for everyone but don't sell yourself short and take someone elses word for it. BTW i'm a college recruiter. GO TO COLLEGE! haha

Why do you think that "so many people" fail?

The drop out rate is not that high, of course that will vary from college to college, but in general the majority of students go on to graduate with a bachelor's degree.

Many kids go to college because they just think that is what they are supposed to do after high school and that is what their friends are doing.

and if you manage to work your way up the ladder you will eventually hit a ceiling due to the fact that you have no degree.

Dude, you sound almost as much of a proffesional student as i do College was the BEST time of my life.

I did the least amount of actual work in college of anyone i know and easily got by. I mean, I studied for tests (with notecards...and forgot the shit as soon as i stepped out of the classroom), did assigned projects/papers etc., and occasionally went to class. Other than that, i was a rockstar


I think you'd make a big mistake by not going to college. First, merely with a degree, as stated above, it opens SO many more doors than without one. Secondly, and most importantly, it's your last hoorah before joining the real world (bangin' chicks, partyin' like there's no tommorow, meeting so many people and some great friends you'll have for the rest of your life).

So yes, you should go to college.

especially in the coporate world of today. many companies have written policies regarding how high a person can go w/o a college degree.

take for example. 10 years ago you could get a decent job as a clincal psychologists with a BS. now in many parts of the country you need at least a MA to get anywhere in that field.

sure, but it's an investment for your future. just like eating healthy and exercising is a long term investment for your health.

If I had to do it over I would have gone to either law or medical school, sure I would have been $100K in debt but I could pretty much bank on making $100k+ per year, especially if I went to medical school. So, if you weigh it out that way and figure how much you willl make with just a bachelor's or no degree that debt is nothing long term.

I only went for a year!

I've been running my own web programming business for the last 5 years making more money than I ever thought I would!! I didn't go to college to learn programming either. I learned it on my own in my spare time while working as a supervisor for several factory type jobs

College is not a guarantee of success. I know of many college grads who can't find jobs and are flipping burgers because they have bills to pay.

Life is what you make of it!

With that said, I recommend at least some college. I did learn some good business and writing skills.

that being said. I work in the mortage industry where you can be VERY successfull with out a degree. just about everyone I know makes over 150k a year as a loan officer with out working very hard. One of my good friends holds a senior position at Amtrust Mortgage in Dallas. He makes about 80-90K a month and didn't graduate from high school.
