this view has been debated for awhile. i am trying to diet and loose weight but i have one question. do i cut down on the carbs or the calories?? but also while dieting and losing weight, i am alos working out and lifting weights. so i want to no shuld i cut down on the calories or the carbs??

The simplistic view is that it is going to come down to Calories. However proper food choices and Carb choices are essential to a decent diet.

I am not sure why Carbs have been so demonized in the diet world, a decade ago it was fats and now carbs.

Carbs aren't the culprit for gaining fat, eating too many calories is.

Cause they are uniformed and persuaded by the media, Just like the fat scare a decade ago.

Proteins, Carbs, and Fats are important in a healthy diet.

Carbs are calories so yes too much can lead to a weight gain.

so if i eat less calories i will lose weight correct? and if i eat alot less calories than i need (calculated online) will it hurt my body in any way?

and if i eat alot less calories than i need (calculated online) will it hurt my body in any way? Severe caloric restrictions can have a negative impact, slowing down the metabolism, thyroid problems.

The goal shouldn't be immediate weight loss, you need to sort out a behaviour you can stick to, so that when you reach you goal weight you can make adjustments, and continue your healthy lifestyle.

Assuming you are over weight, remember it took you a while to get there, so don't assume it will just fall off without repercussions.

I adhere to a fact that is undeniable. Burn more calories than you use.

But, unless your lifestyle changes... counting either is useless. And always... in moderation - so that the changes have more chance to take root.

I'm not preachin'. That's just the fact. BTW - I don't concern myself with counting carbs... just try to eat good ones, as well as everything else.

if you cut down your carbs are you not cutting down your calories? ;)

Yup.
If you keep your fat low and your protein at 1 g per lbs then really the only think you manipulate is carbs.

I learned that from TPs carb cycling article and I am a believer in carb cycling.

I to have disagree here. In this case a calorie is not just a calorie. Many people (most that have slower metabolisms) are carb intolerant. Their body cannot process carbs properly. These people benefit greatly from a carb reduction in their diet. Not only will it speed up fat loss but lower cholesterol, blood pressure and reduce risks for type 2 diabetes.

I'm not preaching low carb diet because I don't think they are the best option. What I'm saying is that a diet lower in carbs is better for general health and fat loss.

Thanks and I agree. I was generalizing the whole carb fear, it annoys me.

BTW do you think someone can correct there insulin sensativity over a period of time, with proper eating habits and proper carb choices.

If u are training hard doing cardio and lifting then carbs will be important to give u the energy so I reckon keep carbs as a important part of your diet but be smart with it.

- Eat good carbs (Oats, wholemeal pasta, granary bread, brown rice etc)
- Eat carbs at the right time, after your WO is perfect cause then the carbs will work for u
- Keep carbs to about 30-35% of your diet but to still make gains in your training but keep your protein high (approx 1.5g per pound of your bodyweight) and increase your fats (EFA's, Flax, etc)
- Try and get your carbs in early in the day if possible

Give it a go and let me know how u get on.

If you eat a lot less, yes you can hurt your body. Your body needs a certain amount of calories a day, and if you go below your basal metabolic rate (what is needed for your cells to work, digestion, brain function etc), your body will think it is starving, start eating your muscle and start to get by on fewer calories.

I am with you on this one, SO ANNOYING!!!

I don't think there are that many people that are insulin sensitive.

I think if people stopped eating a half a cup of sugar a day there would not be an issue.

I have a theory that the increase in type 2 diabetes is just because people are FAT, don't exercise and effectively 'burn out their pancreas' from all the sugar peaks and lows.

See I have to differ with you on this one too. :p Most people, from what I've seen and helped, that have slower metabolisms are insulin sensitive. This is after years of eating clean, exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. I know many on this board that fit this profile too. I'm not talking the average joe here, I mean dedicated people that focus on their health. I am one of them.
