Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette is being ridiculed by gun-rights advocates after the ardent supporter of a high-capacity magazine ban appeared to flub the facts on what a magazine actually is.
Her widely noticed comments were made at a Denver Post forum earlier this week on the gun debate.
Questioned on what's to be done with the millions of high-capacity magazines already in circulation, DeGette asserted that they'd be discarded once they're used.
"I will tell you these are ammunition -- bullets -- so the people who have those now they are going to shoot them, and so if you ban -- if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available," she said.
Magazines, however, are reusable as they can be filled with more bullets.
A spokeswoman issued a statement to the Denver Post, which had flagged the comment as inaccurate, explaining that the congresswoman who has worked on a high-capacity magazine ban for years "simply misspoke" -- "she should have referred to 'clips,' which cannot be reused because they don't have a feeding mechanism."
Yet, clips can also be reused -- and the questioner in this case asked specifically about high-capacity magazines, not clips.
The comment fueled long-running complaints by gun-rights groups that those lawmakers trying to regulate firearms do not fully understand the issue.
"Rep. Diana DeGette appears not to understand how guns work," the National Rifle Association tweeted.
Colorado just passed a sweeping gun law, joined most recently by Connecticut which approved its package of regulations Wednesday.
DeGette is among the vocal advocates for gun control legislation at the national level, as Senate Democrats push for a vote on a bill later this month.

Pfff This is why underground economy is so damn good making non taxable profit of over billion dollars each year.

I have 20 mags of 30 rounds ak and around 15 mags of 30 rounds for AR, and two drum mag for AK.

I can probably goto my friend's forge and press them out if I wanted to. Magazines are easy and cheap as shit to make one if you have few tools.

Let them ban it and have their way.

People are still gonna carry them anyway and its same shit as selling and buying weed.

All we can hope for is that everyone remembers all these representatives when the next elections roll around in 2014 and
vote them out. She has been working on a high capacity magazine ban for years and still doesn't realize that they are reusable not disposable and these are the people representing us? Sounds to me like she would have trouble spelling magazine much less understanding how it functions.

How would they know? All but a handful have never been in the military and they have someone else do their security for them.

This reminds me of the news video of a post drug bust that pulled down a bunch of firearms. The in front of the camera holding a SKS and calling it an AK47, then picking up a Winchester lever action model 94 and calling it a bolt rifle. These are the people making the decisions that impact our lives.

Obama dropped this nugget today
I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don?t have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon -- by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly.

the typical 1% in politics doesn't know anything about firearms. there might be the occasional Ivy Leaguer that has some minimal experience with guns but not much. shit fucking Cheney shoot his friend in the fucking face!

the live in a completely different world then the "average" wage worker in the US. that's why the enact the types of policy that they do, it never effects their lives.

This is not any surprise. Lawmakers routinely make laws about things they have no understanding about. Then they have some panel write thousands of pages of regulation that no one has read and then they vote on it. Its almost comical if it wasn't stripping us of our rights.

Our politicians are just as misinformed as the people who vote them in office. Until the people wise up, it's only gonna get worse.

Hahaha! I thought the same thing.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two key senators have reached a bipartisan deal on expanding background checks to more gun buyers, a Senate aide and lobbyist said Wednesday, an agreement that could build support for President Barack Obama's drive to curb firearms violence in the wake of the elementary school shootings in Connecticut.
Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., planned to announce their compromise later Wednesday morning. Subjecting more firearms purchases to federal background checks has been the chief goal of Obama and gun control supporters, who promote the system as a way to prevent criminals and other potentially dangerous people from getting the weapons.
Meanwhile, the Senate is ready for an opening vote on restricting guns as Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., set a roll call for Thursday on starting consideration of the firearms legislation. The background check deal makes it even likelier that Democrats will win enough Republican support to thwart an effort by conservatives and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to block consideration from even starting.
The background check deal would expand the system to cover all commercial sales, such as at gun shows and online. Records of the transactions would have to be kept by licensed gun dealers, the same system used currently.
Private transactions that are not for profit, such as those between relatives, would be exempt from background checks.
Currently, background checks are required only for sales through licensed gun dealers.
The aide and lobbyist spoke on condition of anonymity to describe private talks.
The administration was continuing its effort to pressure Congress on gun control on Wednesday as first lady Michelle Obama planned to visit a Chicago high school where authorities say 29 current or former students have been shot in the past year. Eight of them died.
The background check deal and the Senate's scheduled threshold vote on the gun bill were a boost for advocates battling for firearms restrictions in the wake of December's shootings that killed 20 first-graders and six staffers at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
"I hope Republicans will stop trying to shut down debate and start engaging in the tough issues we were sent to Washington to tackle," Reid said.
Manchin and Toomey are among their parties' most conservative members and a deal could make it easier for some hesitant senators to support the background check measure, at least for now.
Even so, the ultimate fate of gun legislation remains unclear, clouded by opposition from many Republicans and moderate Democrats in the Democratic-led Senate and the Republican-run House. Many critics say the proposal would violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms and burden law-abiding gun owners.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who led an earlier unsuccessful effort to strike a bipartisan background check deal, is backing the compromise after changes were made from an initial version of the deal between Manchin and Toomey, according to a Senate aide who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe details of the talks.
The changes included eliminating language that would have required states to recognize permits to carry concealed weapons issued by other states and eliminating language that would have limited background checks to sellers who sell at least five guns annually, said the aide.
Some Republicans might vote to begin debate on the legislation but eventually oppose the measure on final passage. Other parts of Obama's gun effort already seem likely to face defeat, including proposed bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
The gun legislation Reid wants the Senate to debate would extend the background check requirement to nearly all gun sales. Reid would try to replace that language with the Manchin-Toomey compromise once debate begins, a move that would require a vote.
The overall gun bill also tightens federal laws against illegal gun sales and slightly increases federal aid for school safety.
Thirteen conservatives have signed a letter saying they will block consideration of the measure, and McConnell said he will back that move. That will force Democrats to round up 60 votes to overcome the conservatives.
At least eight Republicans have said they want to begin debate or have indicated a willingness to consider it, a number that would be expected to grow if the background check agreement proves successful.
Some moderate Democrats were remaining noncommittal and could oppose opening the gun debate. There are 53 Senate Democrats and two independents who lean Democratic.
Amid the maneuvering, relatives of some Newtown victims are lobbying to support gun curbs. And Obama has been calling senators from both parties to push for the gun bill.
"People should listen to what we have to say and move the debate forward," said Mark Barden, who lost his 7-year-old son, Daniel. "It's not just about our tragedy. Lots of kids are killed every day in this nation. We have to help lead the change."
The National Rifle Association opposes Obama's effort and is urging its members ? it claims nearly 5 million ? to tell lawmakers of their opposition.
In GOP-heavy Louisiana, the NRA asked members to contact Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who is seeking re-election next year. "The future of our Second Amendment rights are at stake," the mailing said.
Counteracting that has been an effort by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, one of whose leaders is billionaire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It said it will keep track of key gun-related congressional roll calls and make the information available to voters and contributors ? a tactic long used by the NRA and other groups.

Sellout is worse than the Feinstein gun ban!
Urgent action required. It is urgent that every gun owner call their Senators today and demand that they oppose the ?See a Shrink, Lose your Guns? sell-out bill that is being authored by Senators Pat Toomey (R) and Joe Manchin (D) - but which also has Chuck Schumer?s fingerprints all over it. Call immediately at 202-224-3121.
See a Shrink, Lose your Guns. The anti-gun "ranters" have spent the last week telling us that Republican Senators can?t filibuster Harry Reid?s gun control bill; that they can?t cut off debate to a bill they haven?t seen yet. ?Let the bill come up,? they say. ?We need to see the bill? before Senators can vote against cloture to proceed to it.
Well, we?ve seen the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer sell-out, and it?s worse than the Feinstein gun ban, which will reportedly be tied to it and offered simultaneously in a Senate procedure known as an ?amendment tree.?
Toomey and Manchin will claim that their bill only covers ?gun show sales? and Internet sales. But if you?ve ever talked about your gun and /or let it be known you?d like to sell or buy a gun on the Internet, this language covers you. If you advertise your gun in the church bulletin and the bulletin is put on the Internet, you?re covered.
The only exemption is for sales that are sold exclusively by word of mouth. The increased number of background checks would likely exacerbate the system breakdowns (inherent to NICS) which have shut down gun shows over and over again. It would mean that Americans who were illegally denied firearms because their names were similar to other people's would effectively be barred from owning a gun. (We would never tolerate such delays for voting rights or other freedoms that we are guaranteed.)
And for those Republicans who think they?re going to be able to offer their useless amendments, guess what? Reid is reportedly going to use a procedure to block out all amendments (called an ?amendment tree?). And there are plenty of Senators standing in line to make sure that the Senate doesn?t give ?unanimous consent? to let those Republicans offer their amendments.
So if you live in a rural area, you?re effectively barred from selling or buying a gun - or it at least becomes very, very difficult.
Incidentally, the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer ?national registry? language is full of holes. There will be a national gun registry as a result of this sell-out.
But that?s not the worst part. Under an amendment in the bill to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), you could have your guns taken away because your private shrink thinks you?re ?dangerous? and could send your name directly to the FBI Instant Check system.
Did you think it was terrible that 150,000 military veterans had been added into the NICS system because they?d seen a VA shrink about their PTSD? Well guess what? Now it?s going to happen to the rest of the population ... by the millions!
And the next step, of course, will be to begin to sue psychiatrists that don?t send every single patient?s name to the Instant Check system, and to make sure that their lives are ruined if they don?t send a patient to NICS and anything goes wrong.
The bottom line: ?See a shrink; lose your guns.?
All of this will reportedly be on an amendment tree with the Feinstein gun ban and magazine bans.
Repeal of gun owner protections. In addition, Toomey no doubt unintentionally agreed to repeal one of the most important protections for gun owners that was included in the 1986 McClure-Volkmer Act - the provision that would allow you to take an unloaded, locked-up gun through states like New York without being stopped. Under a new subsection (c), the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer bill would require you to ?demonstrate? to the satisfaction of New York police where you were coming from and where you are going to. And, if you don?t do that to their satisfaction, they can arrest you.
Please keep in mind, nothing in this bill would have stopped Newtown dirtbag from killing his mother and taking the firearms that she owned and perpetrating the horrible crimes that he committed.
Nothing is this bill would actually make children safer at schools. There is nothing that will actually keep bad guys from stealing or illegally acquiring guns, but there?s plenty that will threaten our gun rights!
ACTION: Click here to contact your two senators immediately. Tell them the ?see a shrink; lose your guns? sellout is even worse than the Feinstein gun ban which will reportedly be on the same amendment tree with it. Distribute this alert far and wide.
Time is short, so if you call - at 202-224-3121 - you may click here to see the pre-written letter and use the contents to help direct your comments.
