Energy Drink Use May Lead to Alcohol Dependence ScienceDaily – Many adolescents and college students innocently ingest large amounts of energy drinks to stay awake. But, new research shows that energy drink over-use is strongly linked with increased risks of engaging in episodes of heavy drinking and developing alcohol dependence. I dont see how that's much different then pounding coffee to stay awake. I don't see how it leads to alcoholism but I can understand that it could program someone to get "benifits" out of a drink. Ie.. stay up longer, get drunk.

The relationship between energy drinks an alcohol is most likely due to the brain/body trying to get back to some sort of homeostasis. Too many stimulants and the body craves depressants and vice versa; e.g. every hear anyone say "I only smoke when I drink."
Drink alcohol, a depressant, and crave nicotine, a stimulant.
It doesn't apply to everyone equally, of course, but we are speaking of college students here and extreme substance abuse. Ah, the memories!

As for the dependence factor, I think PushAndPull is dead-on. Some folks just have personalities that are prone to addiction.

Crock of shit.

Pushandpull is dead on. The type of personality that would drink large amounts of energy drinks is the same type of personality that would drink large amounts of alcohol. Correlation does not imply causation. Can we please make an appeal to journalist to stop pretending to be researchers. I am so fucking sick of reading garbage written by tards spreading bullshit to other tards to regurgitate.

I'm with pushandpull as well. Addictive behavior is the presiding theme. Seeking to alter one's mental/emotional state in a chronic and obsessive manner is or will become an issue, whether it be energy drinks or booze etc... This is as much crap as the notion that cannabis is a gateway to other drugs. As if it has some magical powers or some odd. The fact is ANY substance which is abused habitually is a primer for the abuse of ANY other substance. The psychological profile of the individual and the environment that said individual is in will dictate the outcome of such tendencies.

No wonder why I like Tequila/Hitman Energy shot combo's :>)

Crap, all the Four Lokos I've been pounding must be creating a vicious circle of addiction in my life. :jerkit:
