I've been lifting for about 2 months now consistently and I have seen some changes in my chest and arms. I was just wondering about my stomach. I have a little fat on my stomach, not much, but I can pinch it. I was wondering if ab exercises (crunches, etc) would get rid of the fat, or should I run and do other cardio to lose it. Also if I do cardio, will it affect my muscle gain in a negative way?

Diet and cardio will work.

A little cardio, probably wont. Lots of cardio, very possibly could.

Diet is the first step without a doubt. If you are eating foods that put your muscles in an insulin resistent state, and your fat cells in an insulin responsive state, you will continue to store fat easier than you gain muscle.

Lowering your body fat is primarily about diet. To get your diet going, this is a good place to start:

Don't stop reading there, but this will definitely give you a lot of good information.

In terms of training, doing some additional cardio will certainly accelerate your fat loss. If you are concerned about muscle loss, then you should look into HIIT cardio or Max-OT cardio. Both are forms of higher intensity, but shorter duration, cardio that are geared towards increasing your resting metabolic rate while minimizing lean tissue loss. Just do a search and you will find plenty of information on both.

I would also suggest that you perform all cardio on days that you don't lift, and do it early in the day so that your metabolism stays elevated for hours after the cardio. Also, performing cardio on an empty stomach is not wise if losing muscle is a concern.

Cardio and clean eating, and watching your caloric intake

I thought that you should do that because your body would have nothing else to burn so would burn more fatty tissue?

Your body quite readily has the ability to tear down muscle for aminos to convert into glucose.

Some people choose to do this when cutting, but I don't really see the point. In the end, it's all about calories in vs. calories out. The idea behind cardio is to take advantage of the metabolism raise that is sustained for hours after you finish the cardio and the increase in resting metabolic rate. You can put your LBM at risk if you want to, but you'll never catch me doing such a thing.

I preformed a seach on 'foods that put your muscles in an insulin resistent state, and your fat cells in an insulin responsive state' and came up with nothing. Just wondering which foods do this.
