Kicks can knock you down with sheer force, something rare for a punch. Obviously you have to know how to do it (someone who can't punch is gonna get beaten just the same as someone who can't kick) and do it at the right time (it's not like I wouldn't punch someone; kicking is just more effective if each is in an ideal situation).
....thats why kick boxing requires you to kick a certain amount every round.
