Does menstruation cause water retention?

Not menstruation per se, but yes over the course of the cycle water weight can fluctuate pretty radically.

K. Thanks. That should make my wife feel better. She seems to have a "bad" week weight wise every once in a while, no matter how well she's been eating and working out, and we just realized it's always during her menstruation period. She gained 2 pounds this last week while on a 500 cal deficit so I figure it's got to be water.

Absolutely.

I used to freak out too,and still do,my weight can go up to 4-5 pounds,or even more if I loaded on carbs.
Built had to 'yell' at me to chill out several times until I learned to just accept it and give it a few days.
And sure enough - weight drops as soon as you're done bleeding,LOL!

:ohyeah:

Women really have the short end of the stick. She can be losing a pound a week and it can be completely covered up by the water. She's just gotta trust the deficit.

lol my girlie and i just started our 3 week crash diet and she started hers yesterday so i told her to stay off the scale this week.

I never start a diet the week of. I start the day after...that way I have a full 3 weeks to see results. I never lose anything on a period...no matter how hard I am working.

Of course you do - you just don't see it until the water drops!
