YES ! it is very important to get some type of fuel in your body to at least minimize the muscle catabolism...cortisol levels are naturally high in the early am hours, that combined with weight training on a completely empty stomach is a recipe for disaster...

I understand that, but my point is that I have tried eating a decent meal before my working workout (e.g. a couple of eggs, a shake, etc), and one of two things happens:

1) I cramp up
2) I end up having to take a shit during the workout (which, as you might know, hinders your workout).

A small "meal" before a workout seems to work best for me.

What is wrong with eating a bowl of oatmeal before a workout?
 
The oatmeal is slow digesting/burning. It won't kick in until after your workout is done. And your body has nothing to burn as fuel. And then you still haven't given your body anything as far as protein. SO your body is eating away at your muscle! And a meal doesn't have to be big....just get a good protein shake. Then eat your oatmeal after your workout!

That one has me stumped?? Maybe it is related to your creatine problems??? Your body is in a dehydrated state also in the morning. You need liquids!
 
What about cardio days? Is it better to eat before 20mins of cardio first thing in the morning, or do the cardio on an empty stomach?
 
100% oats take 90 minutes to digest...

20-30 grams of whey and 8 oz of OJ w/ pulp would be much better...

I have always heard not eating before cardio in the morning, burns the most fat! But on the other side........if you are trying to build muscle, if you don't get at least some protein before you do cardio, you're burning muscle=NOT GOOD! I like what IAB said...everyone is different..you really need to find out what works best for you!
 
Wow guys! Thanks for all the responses to this thread. I really enjoyed reading all the different opinions.

Today I tried making eggs but I was way too groggy and could not focus...so I had the 'old stand by' EAS Results for Her shake and a couple of ww crackers. I bought a small carton of heavy cream. So tomorrow morning I will either make a shake or make some eggs. Too much to concentrate on so early! I am seriously half asleep at this time of day.

And to whoever made the psycho comment....hell yes! :)

Well, I eat anything I have nearby with sugar in it. Sometimes I just take in a glass of Cherry Coke. Or perhaps a couple of those mini powdered doughnuts. Yum! Yum! :thumb:

Thanks man. Maybe I will try this, although mixing protein and OJ will probably gag me. I love Tropicana Grovestand though!
 
On the subject, would grape juice (100% Welch's) be a suitable substitution for OJ in the protein cocktail?
