is it better to exercise each muscle group once a week (ie push/pull/legs type routine)

or better for twice a week ie A B A, B A B type routine, this is in general for a natural builder

It really depends on your goals. You can try both and see which one works
Better.

If you're a very muscular lifter with years of training behind you, the former may suit you well.

If you're anyone else, the latter is more likely a good fit.

im not very muscular, been lifting on and off for a few months learning the lifts etc, but i now want to fully go into building muscle, im an ectomorph by nature, about 154lbs and 5 foot 10.

was thinking something like

workout a

squat 3 x 8
bench 3 x 8
military press 3 x 8
calf raise 3 x 8
french press 3 x 8

workout b

deadlift 3 x 8
pull up 3 x 8
bent over row 3 x 8
hamstring curl 3 x 8
hammer curl 3 x 8

on an A B A, B A B type routine

This is the routine used by a top bodybuilder frank calta in the eighties, with great success,I sometimes train this way,and at other times, I will still only train 3 times a week, but will train each bodypart once a week.
