it's been about 5 days now that I haven't been in the gym, which was a much needed break i guess given all the cramps i was getting from just rolling over in bed. but I had an awful flu that had me dry heaving, and evidentally a kidney stone which sent me to the hospital, got some meds, slept, I feel a little better but a little groggy. My question is, should I try to put up the weight i left off or slowly make my way up to where I was?, only good outcome is now my abs are shredded and a little lose in bf%.

i feel like i almost lost everything i worked for.. i think i even look smaller, it's very depressing.

few days of a bad flu could make you feel like shit and it is hard to recover fast from it sometimes.
if you feel better and no fever at all ...just go for a light full body workout 6 sets each muscle group except legs. then the next day do legs alone. then rest one day then start your normal workouts

Four months ago I got salmonella from bad peanut butter. Puked for about two weeks almost died. Lost about 20+ lbs, was out of the gym for about 6 or 7 weeks. It's all relative bro, don't let it stop you. When I went back to the gym I was weak like a half drowned kitten. But I took my time and my strength came back very quickly. Took 4 to 6 weeks or so. Just take your time with the food too. Ease back into eating so much. Let your body heal. Then get back in the gym and smash some weights.

The flu virus in particular can also weaken your heart. Take it easy. I know a guy who used to box, had flu for a week then went for a light run when he was feeling better. Next day he had a heart attack. Luckily he's alright, but damn. Err on the side of caution. If it takes you a month to start lifting in the same ball park fuck it. What's a month out of your life?

^^^^Truth!

Sucks for you now, but you'll get it all back soon.

once your appetite is 100%, Carb load for a couple of days to get your glycogen levels restored. You'll puff back up a bit.

Ease back into it - exhausting your muscles with workouts will either redirect some of the energy toward muscle building that should be getting you well. You're going to have less energy, so that may mean your muscles do not rebuild so quickly. I'd rest until you feel right.

I agree on easing into it. I just got over a bout with the flu as well. I missed almost a week of lifting. I did not ease back into it like I should have and strained my lower back on Saturday while deadlifting. I couldn't finish my workout on Saturday and have not been able to lift since then.

Take it easy until you are sure you are back to 100%, so you don't hurt yourself like I did.

Ive been battling this cold for a week, everytime I think I feel better I go in the gym and hit it hard, sure enough 4 hours later I am exausted and feel like crap the next day, giving in and letting my body get better, sux but lesson learned.

Bro, I been in your predicament more than a few times. Here is my policy.
First week in I go a little bit lighter than normal (but not too much! I am in the gym to WORK afterall). I bust my ass and put some work in with those lighter weights for the first week. Then week 2 I increase them and Week 3 I try to be back to where I was. Being that you were only out for 5 days you should recover quickly. Plus, if you think about it. Your first two weeks will be a good switchup for your muscles, a little more volume than normal. By the time you get back to week 3 you don't have to worry about injuring yourself (which would be a worry if you jumped right back into the same weight on week 1).
