two quick questions

1) playing golf a few years back i pulled the muscles in my back just below my shoulder blades (stupidly not warming up twice and pulling each side on differant occasions...yes i know twat!) Anyway the problem is that if its cold and even thou i warm up loads now i can still feel it being a bit sore and feel that i need to strengthen them to stop them from straining, pulling tearing etc. So anyone got any ideas?

2) secondly which area of the body should i be concentrating more to help my swing?

feel free to answer with comedical answers but some serious ones would be nice as well

Cheers

Will

no one plays golf then?

Will

um, do some back exercises. Maybe try to control your swing better. If you are pulling things then I would think you are swinging wildly and to hard.

hips/lower back.

lots of hips. rotational strength.

"rotational strength", that sounds so scientific.

How I amuse myself here.

grab a medicine ball and swing it like its a golf club....
the gym i used to go to has a medicine ball with a rod stuck threw it for all the old people to hone theyre swing strength
give that a shot

thanks everyone, i like the medicine ball idea!

Cheers

Whatever you do, don't do any motions in the gym that "mimic" golf motions. Strengthen the hips, glutes, legs, shoulders, forearms.

DO NOT SWING A MEDICINE BALL LIKE A GOLF CLUB. That is just silly.

I agree....the idea of mimicing the motition could fuck with the biomechanics of your swing. In athletics the best thing you can do is strength the musculature that is used for your given sport AND incorporate that newly accuired level of strength into your game by practiving the ACTUAL sport itself. So in this case...train your hips, rotary strength and shoulders and make sure that you play golf and work on your swing at the same time.

Stretch your back, hams, and hip flexors. Its much more important to be flexible than strong. Then swing a club that is a few oz. heavier than normal. You can add weight down the shaft of an old club. Swing it 100 times a day and you will soon see your swing getting stronger.

Bump to that and DD's statement.

Do pitchers get better by throwing shotputs like a baseball? No, they get injured.

i never said swing a medicine ball at tiger like swing speeds
you mimick the motion of the golf swing with the medicine ball
kinda like that 10lb golf club they have thats supposed to be so helpful

funny you say that. Did you see the new NSCA Journal where that guy wrote the article on training pitchers with band resistance as they work through the same ROM of their wind up and delivery to the plate?

yeah, I readed that. doesn't seem like a good idea, imo.

yea, I thought it sucked....but, we should defenitly look into plyometric pogoballs.

I am about 40lbs too heavy for a pogoball. :)

i would concentrat on your core, and stablelizer muscles, a lot of power comes from this area, secondly i would concentrat on the romboids and also think stretching the pectorals would be advantageous.

a good exercise that i use with my clients is to practise swinging a golf club on a BOSU with the plate side up.

I would think that might just fuck with their stroke, no?

hit lots of balls and stretch

i don't know much about you, but before i think you are a close minded numbnut" you should try this, as this really works the stablizer muscles, it also increases rotational speed during the down swing, and improves your stroke on the follow thru. just a couple of insignifacant aspects to golf, but by your comment you would already have known this.

I wouldn't swing a club from a bosu, but that's just me. Swinginig a golf club from a bosu will make you better at swinging a golf club from a bosu, and potentially mess up the biomechanics of your normal swing. I would do other stuff with the bosu.

That's what I was thinking. This is especially true when it comes to a golf swing. Technique is far more important than how much force you can exert when it comes to swinging a golf club.

UGH.

Why on Earth would anyone practice for swinging a club with a medicine ball or anything when you could practice your swing with a freaking GOLF CLUB??

The more similar a neuromuscular action, the more likely they are to interfere with each others application. Throwing a baseball as a pitch and throwing a football like a damn football are completely different (the mechanical action, muscle action sequence, etc). So why on earth would you , if you are practicing for baseball, start pitching footballs?? Get a clue. You are absolutely silly.

why do boxers train with heavier gloves?

so when they have the normal ones on theyre hands fly, same reason for a heavy golf club, increase swing speed

because golf has nothing to do with strength and everything to do with club head speed

see tiger woods if you dont believe me

If a punch is off by a fraction of an inch it makes no difference, if the club head at impact is off by a fraction of an inch you will be in the lake or woods looking for your ball.

wow good point

i still think the weighted club is a good idea IMO

but i dont golf anymore so who cares

Another thing you gotta look at is the flex of the club. A heavier club will flex more if the weight is at the head. I used to golf and the same principle holds true of graphite clubs, the material is more flexible so the graphite club will flex more at a given speed. This translates into a completely different swing. I had graphite clubs and had to sell them because they flexed too much since I am a hit the hell out of the ball kind of guy. So you would basically need to find a club that is heavier and has the same flex at all given speeds, prolly not doable.

Are you suggesting that strength and speed don't have a correlation? All things equal, if strength increases, power capacity increases: if strength decreases, power capacity decreases. If a golfer has perfect form and a perfect swing, the only thing that needs to be improved is strength. So practice the swing and work to improve your strength, but to them as different functinos. You need to re-evaluate your logic.
