a question, a friend of mine is taking HCG for weight loss, something his doctor is prescribing him, and he is on a 500 calorie diet a day, with in 26 days he has lost 34 pounds!

is this safe? what are some of your opinions on this?

i know that its used for AAS cycles but weight loss?

HCG is commonly prescribed for weight loss at the discretion of a physician. I think it's aimed more towards those who are borderline obese though.

I can't see a 500 calorie diet being at all healthy, for whatever reason. I'm sure he's taking plenty of supplements.

34 lbs of FAT in 26 days is doable, granted both diet and cardio are in order. Also depends on how heavy he is. If he's 400 lbs, 34 lbs. would probably go unnoticed.

Interesting.

In vitro effects of chorionic gonadotropin hormone...[J Endocrinol. 2007] - PubMed Result

In vitro effects of chorionic gonadotropin hormone on human adipose development.

It is well known that pregnancy is associated with fat weight gain. However, the mechanisms whereby fat mass accumulation is controlled during this period are poorly understood. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), in vitro, influences human adipose tissue development and/or metabolism. For the first time, HCG/LH receptor was characterized in human adipose cells. We also demonstrated that physiological concentrations of HCG, while unaltering both lipolysis and expression of two markers of lipogenesis (FAS and ADD1) in human mature adipocytes, stimulate human preadipocyte growth via the activation of a protein kinase A-independent mitogen-activated protein kinase/c-fos signaling pathway. HCG also moderately increases the preadipocyte differentiation capacity as reflected by enhanced glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity and expression of key adipogenic transcriptional factors (C/enhancer-binding protein alpha and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2). Finally, HCG significantly stimulates the secretion of the pro-adipogenic factor, leptin, from human adipose tissue. Taken altogether, these data suggest that the pro-adipogenic effect of HCG in human preadipocytes contributes to explain why increased fat storage occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Looks like it'll turn you into one fat mofo in a surplus!

Adipose causes resistance to LH, so exogonous HCG gets them back into a more androgenic state. HCG is far from a miracle weight loss drug, though.

IMO, when you actually research this from sites that don't have a bias, it's pretty obvious this is another fad, and not a safe one at that. This diet is huge in my area, and everyone loves it for the first couple cycles, but I know a few who did this a couple years ago, and they are now bigger than they've ever been.
Here's a good link for some info on this paticular diet.http://http://www.dietscam.org/reports/hcg.shtml
Notice this has come and gone throughout the past several years and studies show that people lose the same amount of weight with or without the hormone. (who wouldn't on 500 calories?)

What I'm more interested in is the potential for action on leptin levels. I couldn't give a rat's ass if it makes you burn fat faster than you would normally. If it would let me starve without noticing, I'd be on that like white on rice.

LOL. I forgot about your satiety issues. Still if you read the studies, they were somewhat different from one to the other but overall it didn't seem to be a significant different in comfort from the different groups (placebo and control). I would guess the difference came from subjects being more carb sensitive than others.

The link I posted puts leptin together with HCG. That's the part I'd like to see more about.

And I wouldn't be doing it on 500 calories a day. I'd be happy if it kept me comfortable on 1600.

You took HCG shots on that diet, chronicelite?

I've done the diet before and got shredded but, this was just me..
Like I said, I'm not contending that you'll lose weight on a 500 calorie diet. I am saying that I think you wasted your cash on the shots as they don't enhance the weight loss not to mention IMO, most likely you lost alot of lean mass in the process, at least if you really did get into the lower bodyfat ranges. I'd like to see some of your "ripped pics" if you have some, as everyone I know who's on this diet (which is alot) are classic examples of "skinny fat" people. On the flip side I'm sure your in a healthier place than you were when you were heavier, so congrats on that, I just hate that this diet as it is IMO not safe as it is so low cal. and really doesn't teach long term healthy habits and sets people up for failure in the end as they always end up losing lean mass and can't even eat what they ate before the diet whithout gaining more weight as lean mass is what burns cals. Glad it worked for you. I really do hope it continues to work for you.

Yes ma'am, daily. Worked very well. :)

However, if you are familiar with candida yeast albican overgrowths, if you have one of these overgrowths, which 90% of people do, you will not be comfortable on this diet because while your candida is killed off, they will make you know they are angry with you LOL
