Anybody do heavy bag for cardio? Not really sure you would call it cardio. I use to do it all the time like 4-5 times a week. I just started it up again. So basically 5 minute rounds with 2 minutes jump rope in between rounds so no real rest at all. Four rounds is about 1/2 hour. It's pretty intense and helps get the daily frustrations out. I's a heck of a lot more fun than working some cardio machine.

Hell yeah it's cardio!! You get one hell of a work-out. I love hitting the bad. Keep it up bro. If you can't find a bag, punch the fattest fucker you see and keep punching as you chase him down the block. That's my favorite work-out for cardio.

LOL... that's why I stared up again, to stay out of jail:2punch:

Hell ya bro i hit the heavy bag too. It definitely takes out some stress and anger. I also like to hit the bag a little bit before my workout to get some blood flowing or to get me pumped.

Dang 5 minutes is forever when going all out hitting a heavy bag. I would puke half way through the second round. I hate cardio...

five minutes is a long time, especially with resistance.

Yeah it's a great workout. I'm headed for it again tomorrow. I had to go to a diff gym but all under my membership so it's great. The place is pretty equipped. I think any cardio that is enjoyable you're going to get more out of.

I've got a heavy bag bro. tiger pump that shit!

that avitar is lewd to say the least, i dont care to see this shit in training section. just saying..

Nobody was holding. I'm not in that great shape yet really but I do a decent amount of cardio throughout the year at the track and doing old grappling drills and such so I'm not a complete winded bone bag yet.

Good for you. I think the key is finding something you enjoy doing. The heavy bag is a great workout.

im only 140lbs but i regulary do bag work, not too keen on the realy heavy bags as i find they hurt my wrists too much(both have had a few injurys from training) but 5 x 5 minuite rounds with 1 minuite breaks in between gets me to sweat like crazy and i very rarly sweat, infact i think lots of bag work had greatly helped with cardio aswell as the obvious technique for me.
the realy heavy bag feel like my knee caps are going to fall off too if i get in close to practice knee's in a clintch.
my favourite for a insane no break bag work out is replace the 2 minuite breaks between rounds with a mix of usualy 3 of the following (jab-cross)sprawls,burpee's,squats,(jab-cross situps) clapping press ups, crunches, oblique crunches or occasionaly ground and pound on a bag thats been removed from the celing.

5x 3 Minute rounds separated by 30 seconds rest, 1min jumping jacks, 30 seconds rest (2min total between each round). Best workout I have EVER experienced.

Only do it 3 times a week at most. Be careful, not supposed to use it much more than that especially with heavy lifting, you can probably overwork your joints and connecting tissues. I also wrap my hands/wrists and use 14oz gloves.

My shoulders burn like hell when I do 1-2min spurts of speed punching. The heavy bag is great for your obliques and serratus muscles as well, if you're throwing from the hips properly.

i laughed my ass of at this

Looks like i'm dusting off the old heavy bag this week.

IMO boxing esp on a heavy bag is the best cario there is. also, IMO boxers are the best physically fit athletes there are.

I used to work the heavy bag all the time, but I found myself laying into it too hard. Id get sore shoulders, sore biceps from all the power hooks, and my wrists took a beating as well. Guess I should've lightened up on it back then, or used better equipment, like boxing gloves and wrist wraps. Great excercise and cardio alternative.

Bag gloves and wrist wraps if you need them. Work on straight punches up the middle rather than so many hooks, and I'm sure you'll be fine.

what are some good routines?

hit hit hit hit hit hit hit hit????

I'm sure there is a right and wrong way, what would be some good recommendations or even good sources to find some routines?

Yeah this. Strait punches are harder to defend in my opinion.

I dont go ape shit on the heavy bags like I used to anymore. Now I have focus mitts and training partners. Better interaction, easier on the joints, and still a decent workout, either for the puncher or the guy holding the mitts.

You can do them HIIT style, which would basically be 1min of just punching as fast as you can where you don't worry too much about form and throwing from the hips, then 1min of alternating power hooks/uppercuts, where you do throw from the hips.

Mitts are an excellent workout, no doubt. I think you are 100% right, it is much easier on the joints.

All the combos are hard to get down, but they beat the monotony of just wailing away at the bag. Some of those combos would be great for self defense too. In mma classes, if you have to sprawl mid combo, that taxes your cardio as well.
