first of all id like to thank all those who helped me with advice, especially built and her blog. ive managed to lose 10 solid lbs in a month and a half.

anyways my question is this. i wish i could gain muscle while losing weight. i workout for an hour or so and do 15-20 minutes of low intensity cardio. because im in a caloric deficit im assuming theres little room to grow muscles as of now. i also am lifting in the 6-8 rep range right now. but am i correct in assuming theres no serving two masters so to speak in my situation?

is it at least possible to maintain on a caloric deficit?? if so how would that go?

Maintain lean body mass? Yes. It's not only possible but that is your basically your goal.

Eat a sufficient amount of protein and keep lifting heavy and you should be fine.

If Built helped you out with your diet, I'm sure it is in order in terms of balance of macronutrients. If you have any questions in terms of your routine, feel free to post it. Another option is to just take on the routine that Built has on her blog. Got Built? » Baby Got Back

If you did have the potential to gain muscle while on your deficit (don't count on it), there are a couple things I might suggest:

Don't combine your cardio and weight lifting.
Do 8-12 reps instead of 6-8.

But even doing everything perfectly, it just may not be possible to pull this off. If you are experimenting with this kind of thing, make sure you do still keep a consistent primary goal and if your experimentation is affecting that goal in a negative way, then go back to what you were doing. In other words don't make both fat loss and muscle gain your goal - you have to choose one goal.

YSK - first off, thanks for the call-out; I'm glad I could help.

Now, depending how lean you are, you might want to consider UD2.0 - Lyle claims you might be able to recomp a little at maintenance and perhaps even grow a bit of muscle while running a modest deficit. Just a thought; great advice in here so far. :)
