While I agree with danzik in that you cannot force someone to understand nutrition and general health, I think sometimes in extreme cases, extreme measures are warranted. The kid is 14 years old and frickin' 555 pounds! Eight years old and 200+ pounds?! The parents are not only messing up the kids physically, but also wrecking them emotionally and socially.
Of course, I am not saying a court should be able to say "your kid must lose weight or we'll take them away," and just leave it at that. The ideal situation would be to offer health education assistance to these families... someone to come in and give examples on what foods are healthy, examples of what consists of healthy meals, and cooking tips.
snip "...South Carolina mom Jerri Gray lost custody of her 14-year-old, 555-lb. son in May. She was arrested after missing a court date to examine whether she should retain custody after doctors had expressed concern about her son's weight to social services."
The woman missed a court date to examine if she should keep custody!! These people have WAY more problems than eating too much crap.
Tbh i don't think it help's that the people who should be helping to educating these kids are doing a crap job too. they are being failed at home as well as at school.
I took my kid's off school lunchs a while ago because i was fed up of my kids coming home from school complaining about the food.
about 3 weeks ago the school sent out a random newsletter trying to encourage parent's to go back to school dinner's.
I read the menu and was frankly horrified at what the school was proffessing to be the "new improved healthy lunch menu" frankly it sucked, my idea of healthy and the school's idea of healthy are WAY different.
The school menu was all starchy carbs and suger, yes it had the "token veg option" but it was overall really really poor.
