I am curious how much weight everyone lifts when it comes to shoulder excerises. I do alot of dumbell exercises for my shoulders and find that I get tendonitis when I do too much weight. I wonder if I am over ambitious with my lifts. I do arnold presses, db press, military, bent over flies, and shrugs but the only two exercises that hurt are the two presses. I do 3 sets of 6-8 with 55 lbs dumbells. My shoulders are my weakest link and have given me problems for some time. I am 5'8" and 185 lbs so, I'm not the biggest guy but when I look at Ironman or Muscle Mag, the bodybuilders are usually only pressing with 40's or 45's. Let me know what you all suggest.

That's cuz those are just pics! I am 5'10" 210, and I military press (seated) between 225 and 250 on heavy sets (5 or 6 reps). I also have shoulder arthritis but it tends not to bother me on presses but other exercises. If your joiunts hurt, I have found that glucosime and chondroitin actually do work. Also taking 2 advil before lifting will help prevent inflamation (and relieve some of the pain).

I'm 205 and do about 205 on seated military press but I like to keep my reps up on shoulders to around 8-10 cause I've had problems in the past with low reps and injurys for shoulders.

when i bench heavy my left shoulder joint hurts some times severley... so guess wwhat i did i Quit benching heavy... i went to lighter wegiht...

Twin Peak & Scotty.. 200plus seated military??? Is this free wieght or smith machine??? I mean I'm not hugely strong in the military press but I work out with 145-155 for 7-8 reps and that is free weights.

Raging Bull... using dumbells is great however it does allow you to come down farther and this could be causing some problems for you. Try not to bring your elbows past 90 degrees or parallel with your shoulders.

Monsters I tell you......Monsters!!! PB...I only use 135(free weight) but hell, I'm a wimp I guess!

for seated presses i use 115 DB for 6-8, on free weight presses 245 for 4-6, working on standing presses at the moment tops right now is 215 for 6-8. i switch between the three about every 4-6 weeks

RB,
I am similar in weight 185 but a little taller 6'. I use 100 lbs for military 8-10 reps free weight, and pyramid up to 110. DB's is similar, 45's to 55's. Side lat. raises I use 20 lbs Db's 10 reps. I feel my shoulder are a weak link also but I am slowly making progress.

I have noticed the same things in some mags, some times I see these huge guys lifting the same weights that I do on bench or something, but then on the next page the dude is leg pressing with like 20 45 lbs plates on the machine.

Its on the smith for me, I'll recheck my jurnal but I think thats right.

Before I had to start cutting calories to lose more body fat, I had worked my way up to using the 40 lb dumbbells for a set of 8 reps. But now I'm only using the 35's for 12, 10, 8 reps cause I lost some strength with this cut!

Exactly! If you've ever had to pose for pics while holding w8's...you'd know why they only use the bare minimum in the mags, lol!

200lb+ military presses are amazing.

Well done chaps.

killer shoulder last night, had an awesome workout

Seated DB presses: warmup
90*10, 100*10, 115*8, still had some so did 130*4 PB!

Upright Rows:
135*10, 165*10, 185*8

Front & Side Raises (supeset)
30*10(each), 40*10(each), 50*6(each)

Rear Delt Machine Flies:
80*10, 110*10, 130*8

Ok ok I lied, I'm only doing 165 for 6 on my last set. (I must have been dreaming yesterday :) )

one of the strange things is that when you switch from say DB back to BB presses it always seems at first you take a big step back in weight. after about a week though you start to shoot past previous PB and move forward. that is why i love to change the presses about once every 4-6 weeks

You people make me feel like a wimp.

Very impressive weights for 200+ military press:thumb: :thumb:

proper training and time are the only thing keeping you away from achieve those goals. by the end of the summer one of my goals was to DB press 130, since i have achieved that now i'm shooting for the 145's, just keep setting goals and working hard to reach them!

the main reason why those pics show guys lifting light weights is because shoulder presses target the anterior head. most people think they target the lateral head which they do not. the lateral head is only as a synergist in that movement. you do not need to lift heavy weights to stimulate hypertrohy in such a small muscle. the lateral head is the meat and potatoes of the shoulders and the only exercise to really hit that is lateral raises using a long TUT.

If I go heavy on shoulders I will only use bb's. and will do partials on the smith or do push presses.

Hey PB_
WHat's your top range of motion? I usually do not go much below parallel w/ the ground on the bottom, but lock out on the top. Do you lockl out, or stop short? Less emphasis on the tri?

My left shoulder is kind of bum, so I do not go that heavy...I was going to post..but I see KryptoAllez would embarrass me...
:)
