During the reps I felt it more in my glutes and hams and some int he lower back than the quads..Mostly in glute and a lot in hams...I think it may be because im doign them wide...i dont go VERY wide though..so im just wondering if this should happen..also since it doesnt workj the quads very well if you do them wide stance what should i be doing for quads then?

Low bar, wide stance squats are what a typical powerlifter does.If you feel it mostly in your hams and glutes then you are doing them correctly. If you want a squatting movement that emphasizes the quadriceps or if you have trouble maintaining an upright posture, switch to front squats. These FORCE you to maintain an upright posture which causes the quadriceps and glutes to become heavily involved. Also, they enable you to go lower than regular squats. This forces your hips and glutes to work harder which will build strength in the bottom position which is a difficult area for most people.Another exercise you can try that will give you the same benefits as squats is deadlifts off of a platform. The platform will increase your range of motion which will involve the leg muscles more and deadlifts also work the back muscles very efficiently.

I dont think the close stance is for me. Without enough practice I can probably pull it off but I dont really want to. I tried front squats today without any weight at all and i leaned forward quite and a bit and when I tried to remain upright i lost my balance. Am I going to be forced to do the leg extension or are there any other excerises for the squats. Does deadlifts work the quads at all? Not on the platform though...

The only other exercise I can think of that would be of any benefit to you is barbell hack squats. They are basically a deadlift with the bar held behind the back and they are very difficult to perform, but, they work the same muscles as the squat. In regards to the front squat, it took me four sessions to get my technique down but it was time well spent.Practice your technique. If you can't do deadlifts, back squats, front squats or hack squats, you are very limited in regards to productive leg exercises available to you.Maybe someone else will have a suggestion for you.

Front squats? What is that? Sounds wonderfully painful.

Lift well! But don't forget to put it down afterwards.

Same as back earwax but the bar rests in front of your neck, on your pecs.
You kind of cross your arms and hold your elbows up.

Painful, yes. Wonderful..........that's still a matter of discussion.
