Here is an interesting link in reference to coffee.

COFFEE

Yes, yes, yes....that's why I got to have my cup of Joe in the morning.

Overall, coffee is good, but just like anything else that is good, in excess it can cause problems.

The first problem arises during pregnancy which he doesn't adress. Up to five cups of coffee a day during pregnancy is fine, but more than that can cause problems to the pregnancy. (Ie: stillbirths see link to the British Medical Journal http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=149440)

If someone is prone to insomnia or sleep problems, ingestion after 10 am can cause problems with their sleep cyle or drinking 9 cups or more a day.

Coffee does increase acid secretion in the stomach so those with reflux or ulcers, be careful,

Be wary of the Parkinson's connection. Most of the studies were done with coffee drinkers who also smoked. Thus, the conclusion was that smoking and drinking prevented Parkinson's, not coffee drinking alone. We aren't sure if the nicotine and coffee combined created a neuroprotective agent from Parkinson's, (My theory is that they were killed off by their smoking before they could develop Parkinson's ):)

Good Post! Cofee isnt as bad as people make it seem. I need to stay awake in the weee hours of the moment. That is the only time I have good ole joe. Other than that I make take caffeine in the form of thermos.

Student Dies after Swallowing Dozens of Caffeine Pills

Columbia Missouri Tribune
October 27, 1998

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) ??? A 20-year-old man died after taking a dare from a fellow student and swallowing dozens of caffeine pills.

Jason Allen had swallowed most of a 90-pill bottle, which would be the equivalent to drinking as many as 250 cups of coffee, authorities said.

'It???s a terrible, terrible story,' said Morehead City police Maj. Wrenn Johnson. 'No one suspects caffeine to be deadly.'

Allen was taking general education development classes at Carteret Community College. He collapsed outside the college during a break from class Oct. 20. It wasn???t known when he took the pills.

A security guard found him and called the rescue squad, which took him to Carteret General Hospital, where he died last Wednesday.

Authorities said it appeared that Allen died of heart rhythm irregularities associated with the high dose of caffeine, which is a central nervous system stimulant.

Ten grams of caffeine will kill you, that's 100 cups of coffee in four hours (or if it's starbucks, considerably less :D )

The guy above sounded like he ingested at least 20 grams

Hi bandaidwomen,

It's good to hear from you again, I missed ya.
I always enjoy your posts. Hope your doing well :)

I know someone who claims they must drink a cup or two of coffee just prior to going to bed or they can't sleep. Now isn't that a strange thing?

Ugggg ohhhhhhh  I guess I will have to chose between my coffee or my hot sauce. :hehe:

Wow! now isn't this a kick in the pants. If you smoke and drink coffee chances are you can avoid getting Parkinson's. But you could get one of the hundreds of cancers or other illnesses caused by smoking. I think I would take my chances and not smoke. :D

Thanks dones...

Yeah I've always loved coffee, I have drank mine black since I was like 15 years old. I usually drink 4-5 cups in the morning just to get me going. That's about it though, I'm primarily just a morning drinker. My coworkers have always teased me about my aladin thermos that I've brought in to work with me since I was 18 years old. I still carry the same thermos :D. Gotta hand it to that thermos company, they last forever :). It still has a dent in the side of it from when I was a kid. I worked for a company driving a forklift and clipped it . But everyday, rain or shine, I bring in that thermos filled with folgers coffee :). I've always hated the company coffee...was like mud.

Interesting, my ADHD patients (attention deficit hyperactiviey disorder) are sedated by coffee as well and use it to fall asleep!

Like with wine or alcoholic beverages, they say I believe that 1-2 a day is healthy... As for coffee, bandaid stated that over 5 cups can lead to problems for pregnant women. I would have to say that coffee would be the same... 2 cups a day would be a safe healthy amount and if your daring up to 5 max.. But 2 sounds like a good number to me :) What do ya think Bandaid?

Prince,

The absolute is the 10 grams or 10,000 mg of caffeine a day as I mentioned above.

So depending on concentration of coffee, ie: espresso, vs. a regular cup of joe, it would take alot to kill someone.

The average cup of coffee is 6 0z and contains 100mg of caffeine. (Higher for starbucks and espressos etc.) Studies in young healthy athletes (remember it is ergonogenic) show safe consumption up to 400mg or 4 cups of coffee at a time spaced three hours apart for a maximum of 12-16cups a day or 1200-1600 mg or 72-oz a day. Some of my ADHD patients who use caffeine for its calming effect (remember stimulants calm down people with ADHD and cofee is a mild stimulant) drink up to 20-30 cups a day. However, when you get to that level, I could not in alll honesty say it's safe for participating in sustained athletic activity since caffeine is a known proaryrthmic (increases cardiac arrythmias) at high doses and in athletes the maximum doses I mentioned above has been studied without causing cardiac arrythmias. The recommendation though is not to exceed 400mg at one time before a long distance event.

I hope that answers your question.

Randy,

the "recommended daily consumption" is about 300mg which won't cause the average person problems (ie:insomnia, palpitations, heartburn, jitteryness) which pretty much comes to three cups of 6oz of cofee a day as you stated but for those coffee addicts, (with the exception of pregnancy) alot more can be tolerated. I tell people if you feel jittery, have heart palpitations, trouble sleeping, bad heart burn etc. 3 cups may be too much or it may take some people 10 cups a day to cause such problems. I leave it up the the individual. The one caveat is the concurrent use of ephedra, the caffeine enhances its thermogenic effects and thus the danger of heat strokes in athletes. ( in fact many of the deaths associated with ephedra were not ephedra alone, but its use with caffeine). So if an athlete stays on ephedra I tell them to cut back on the caffeine to probably about 300mg a day.

I don't like ephedra, but at the same time I don't think it should be banned when so many other things are more dangerous such as smoking and alcohol.

Also, I had already mentioned but if you want to look at over the counter products that have killed more people, look at the painkillers

(1996): "]b]Each year,[/b] use of NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) accounts for an estimated 7,600 deaths; and 76,000 hospitalizations in the United States." (NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen, and tiaprofenic acid.)

However, in all fairness, I will also present some numbers that the proponents of banning ephedra are using:

The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported 1178 ephedrarelated adverse reactions in 2001, accounting for 64% of all adverse reactions secondary to commonly used herbs in the United States. However, ephedra products represented only 0.82% of the herbal products for sale in the United States.

Indeed, the relative risk for adverse reactions among ephedra users are 10- to 40-fold higher than the risk among those who use other herbal products. It is for this reason, these anti ephedra people are chanting their mantra.

Adverse effects meaning heart attacks, strokes, palpitations, chest pain, anxiety attacks etc. and not necessarily deaths.

However, what these people forgot to look at was the concominant use with caffeine that really made ephedra much more dangerous (in fact all the highly publicised deaths were the combination of the two). I feel, what should have been banned was the sale of the two combined rather than ephedra itself.

Bush was just trying to chalk up some voters.

Wow! Thanks a million for your information Bandaid...
Very impressive data as always and I do appreciate it.
Your a great asset to have on the board. :)

Randy:

You know.... I had that same thought in mind Vanity. :hehe:
Those piggies better run now. :hog:

I have heard that this is not true. The darker the roast the less caffine. Most of starbucks coffee is esspreso roast wich is a longer more dark roast which caffine is lost during this long roasting process. Please prove me wrong bandaidwoman. Just so I can justify spending 5 bucks for one non-fat quad venti cappacuino.

Who told you this OWF?

Anywhere I've ever had coffee, the dark roasts seemed to knock my head off, where the lighter blends were always known to be more mellow. Nobody has really ever told me which one was stronger, I just always used my own judgement to tell. Maybe I am wrong, but it sure seems that the darker blends were always stronger. Outside of the color and the type of coffee bean, the grind I believe plays a large role in how strong the coffee will be. The finer the grind the stronger the coffee...
Expressos are all very fine grind and Turkish blends I believe are extra fine.

Here is a link. Starbucks coffee is stronger on average than say the average dunkin donuts coffeee. http://www.napa.ufl.edu/2003news/caffeinecontent.htm

As for espresso, you are right about espresso, but the rule is that 1 shot of espresso has no more caffeine than a cup of coffee. Ounce for ounce, that still means it has more caffeine due to the greater concentration.

Very informative thread, thanks all for your info :) Bandaidwoman, you rock!! :D

I think all this calls for a cup of coffee....What do you say Bandaid? :D

No credit for me :( I created the thread. :cheeky:
