I know we have had religion threads, and I don't want this to turn into a flame thread, but rather a thought provoking thread. If you would like to comment, I would love to hear it.

We don't like to think about our own mortality, nor the mortality of people we know and love. Yet funeral places remain busy week in and week out, with infants to 100 year olds. We take for granted that we will get out of bed, just like the day before.

God seems to have a very different agenda than we would. If there is no God, no afterlife, what then is the point of it all? To be born, to experience life, only to vanish into oblivion taking nothing, being nothing?

ENJOY LIFE NOW!!!
Who knows what will happen after.

Dat's what I'm doing...:thumb:

Me too~

If there is no God, there is no purpose! However, there is a God, so there is a purpose. Just pray people find Him before the funeral home comes!

but how do you know there is a god?sorry dg :D

Different for all people. Some find or reach God through reason, philosophy, other people, the Bible, History, personal experience...

But ultimately it comes down to faith. The bible says seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened, ask and it will be given unto you. You have to do the seeking, knocking and asking.

From a biological/scientific standpoint, the reason for life is to procreate and further the species so it can remain in existence. This can be seen by the fact that the simplest organisms on earth do it. They have no consciousness or awareness of their place in the grander scheme of things. For example, a mosquito lives it's life in a span of days or weeks. The only goal for the female mosquito is to find an animal that will give it a blood meal so it can lay eggs. If the mosquito doesn't attain the meal it will die without furthiering it's genetic line. In the process of attaining it's goal, the mosquito may pass along malaria, encephalitis, west nile, or other diseases that could wipe out other species. It does this without consciousness, vindictiveness, or sympathy. It is what it is and it does what it does because it's genetics force it to.

The difference between humans and other earth species is that we have the gift (or curse) of free thought/will and therefore we are able to examine why we do things and the ramifications of doing them. IF free will were taken away, we wouldn't have be having a conversation about what life is about, life would be about furthering the species only.

Because we have free will we are able to think about why we are here. For some people, religion gives them a sense of being and that they are part of something bigger. For others, it is that through attaining wealth and power they are able to leave something physical or cultural for the people that come later.

DG, life is what you want it to be. If you value power and money, that is what it will be. If you value family and freinds, that is what it will be. If you value religion, then your life will be driven by religious veiws. Through genetic mutation or God's will we were given free will and thought, it is your decision what you will do with it.

And your last question" To be born, to experience life, only to vanish into oblivion taking nothing, being nothing?" If we vanish into nothing and take nothing from this world, you will cease to exist after you expel your last breath, and it won't matter to you anyway.

I don't agree life is what you want it to be. We were given free will by God, not as a genetic mutation. As a by product of that, only one thing will fulfill the soul- that being God. You can fill your life with all the other things, wealth, the gym, family, etc... but you will always have a part of you empty, unless you ask God to leave you alone.

We do not know, nor does any religeon.

No one will know this answer until they're dead.

I get so sick of people, mainly religous people, trying to claim they have this answer. THEY DO NOT!

It's very possible that there is no afterlife, this is it, your one shot...or maybe there is an afterlife, maybe our existence does have a purpose. Who the fuck knows, or cares for that matter.

I refuse to live my life worrying about it, I will find out when I die. I do not need to look for this answer, nor will I ever turn to a religeon that claims they have this answer.

You added a few words to my saying!!!:D

Who said there had to be a point? I'm not saying that I dont believe in a God(s).

If we look at this purely by science (Man's way to try and explain things, besides our many religions), then we know there is randomness everywhere. With billions of years for things to happen, we believe it is all 'natural' and without help from some other being.

The lung fish is the oldest, still living symbol by which we believe life on land started.

But they believe they DO. Just as strongly as your believe they DO NOT. No difference at all. All I know is if there is an afterlife(which I do), there are going to be a lot of people crying, "No fair". lol

Read "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren

Be warned...it is written by a Christian author, but he claims no denomination in the book. It's not about religion/denomination.

I am very religious btw. I believe we are here to fill God's will. But what about people that don't believe this. They have the right to and I don't want to force any beliefs. But IMO what do they have to look forward to? My whole point of the post? Either way, I think we should live life to the fullest and live like it will be your last. It just might be!

^God's will? Why when we created god in the first place?

Man was weak and stupid, they believed the sun and moon to be gods. The Christian God is no different.

yea Gods seemed to change with the weather there for sometime. Anl like said above, even the weather had a God. Finally some guy named Pope found a way to make money from it and ever since then the Gods with no financial power withered away. Religion is a business, nothing more.

In the words of Stalin " God was invented by the rich to deter the poor from stealing their stuff".

Ok dg. What is God's will? And how are we supposed to fulfill it?

LoL, I like that one. I think it is important to be a good person, and people who follow thier religion and believe in it, not just those who wear a label, can very well have guidance and therefore achieve a decent life - other than that I dont think that religion is all that important.

However we will all find out I suppose, if in theory we dont die when we die. I do believe there is something after though, I've seen enough evidence of something myself.

Life and death are always an interesting topic, and it's true that each day may be our last. A friend of mine has a good saying:

"Live every day as if it is your last, because one day you will be right."

My goals in life are to be happy and to help as many people as I can with what I have chosen to do. Plus knowing that if I died tomorrow at least I did what I wanted to do.

The bible says we were created to serve and worship God. Nothing more, nothing less. If we don't he said the rocks and trees will.

Then what are we doing hanging out on the internet and lifting weights? We should be monks.

There is a huge difference!

I never said that I know there is no afterlife.

I said I DO NOT KNOW if there is an afterlife, and neither do they.

They can believe all they want, that proves nothing.

I am 100% correct in saying NO ONE knows if there is life after death, no one.

Naaaaaaaaw...I'll stay here,you go ahead...
:D

Well may as well put out my theory,

god knows everything before it happens correct? Well it states that in the bible, hence he knew what would happen when he put that tree in the garden of Eden, he knew that Satan would reject him before he created him, hell he knew that he would have to send his own son to be sacrificed well before the first man was ever created. What sort of sick asshole would willingly do this? Well apparently he's our god.

Final thought, god's a bitch, have fun and enjoy life.:D

You mean TODAY don't ya???
