losing fat and gaining muscle.

i know that inorder to lose fat you need to consume lesser calories then your body can burn off, meaning cleaner diet and cardio.

and i know that inorder gain muscle you need to consume more calories than your body can burn.

so it is mathematically inpossible to do both, you need to chose one over the other.

but surely your muscle dont just grow becasue of your diet, what about all the lifting you are doing, which is simulating muscle fibres. this is were i am confused, beacuse as i said befor it is mathematically inpossible to do both, but what about people who join the army and only get 3 meals a day and do a lot of running so lose fat, but at the same time gain muscle from dips, chinups, pullups etc...

Or people who go to prison and only get 3 meals a day and get quiet big from doing weight. please dont say drugs in prison. it may be ture that some of them can get a hold of drugs but i find it hard to belive that ever person in prison who got big in there was on drugs.

i guess the reason i am bringing this up is because i am planing on going on a cut soon, and everone who is plaining to go on a cut talks about how to matain.

its the thought of it being inpossible to gain muscle while on a cut that worrys me.

does any one have anything to say on the army or prison issue that might help me see things clearly?

Most guys loose a ton of weight in the army (unless they show up already in good shape). All that running and not a lot of food are not condusive environments to building muscle tissue. They get strong doing pull ups and push ups because all they do is pull ups and push ups.....body weight exercises get easier when you loose weight too.

they may improve on the exercises, but some of the guys come back with muscle mass too, how is this?

the ones that get out of basic training and then go to a base and lift and do stuff like that get jacked.

they may have access to weights and stuff, but wouldnt there calories still be low from a bodybuilding point of view. wouldnt they still need a least 3500-4000 calories a day to build muscle, i dont think people get close to that much calories a day in the army, but some still come back with some muscle. dont get me wrong i am not saying they come back as gaints, but they do have some muscle mass on them.

this is why i think it is not inpossible to gain muscle while on a cut. i think that obviously you cant gain anywhere as close to as much as you would when you are consumeing more calories, but surely you still can gain some muscle from all the lifting you are doing even if its only a little bit of muscle.
 
I think you are consusing the fact that these guys are losing fat and getting leaner, which is giving off the apperance as being "more muscular."

Take an offseason bodybuilder and when he diets down, he may be 20-25lbs lighter than his offseason weight (maybe even more than that), but he looks a ton more muscular.
 
Muscle is denser than fat. If you're putting on muscle, you're going to gain weight.

I think you can get stronger (as you'll become more efficient at the exercises), but you'll reach a point where you need to gain weight in order to get stronger.
