Actually, no one has to respect you. You'll never be able to force anyone to respect you. Respect is earned. It's a personal insecurity to let other's opinions affect you - it's a weakness. Everyone falls prey to this, me included. Once you stop worrying about what people say, you'll be much happier.
Berry, it sounds like your mom doesn't have a clue what you are in to. Have you tried sitting down and telling her about it? I'd bet if you were enthusiastic and informative your mom would be as well. Parents want their children to succeed. She wants you to succeed, but you aren't following her example, so she doesn't understand. All of us have felt the same way about our parents when we were younger (IMO) as you've expressed, and I'm sure someone told us what we're telling you. My first post, about recognizing what you have before it's too late, goes with anyone that you love. It's no big deal that she complains because as you said, you're 20, you don't HAVE to listen to her. But do show her respect, she deserves it, and it's something you won't understand until you become a parent.

Yes, I've tried sitting down with my mom and talking to her about it. I've studied phys ed (I'm in my 4th year of the degree) and have taken tons of nutrition and exercise physiology classes in it. She just hates the way I look and thinks I have an eating disorder of some sort. She sees that I'm quite lean and that I eat lots of veggies, oatmeal and eggs and not white pasta, pizza and rice chips (her favourite snack) and figures I have a problem. There's no point in trying to talk with her about it anymore, I just need to learn to ignore it. (and I've decided to move out so I don't have to deal with her constantly watching and critisizing me anymore...)

I'm glad that you've attempted to reach her. You also don't sound as angry as you did before. I wonder if your behaviour is so foreign to her that she thinks you starve yourself? Have you tried conveniently placing articles about current fitness beliefs? Maybe if she saw evidence that you aren't killing yourself, but are actually incredibly healthy, she would lay off. Moving out does damper the problem, but is she so honestly worried that she'll still panick? It would be awful for her if you were gone and she was left with her imagination - bulimia, anorexia... Moving out solves your problem for the most part, but if she's truly worried, she may become even more of a pest for you, not to mention worry herself to death. Mothers worry, you know? That's their job. And she loves you so she'll be perfect at it. Good luck with your dilemma.
 
1st off guys, I agree that respect is a 2 way street. To get respect you need to give respect without a doubt. Sure some of you have parents that are not going to be winning any parent of the year awards but they are still your parents. The only ones you have so make the best of it. Sure there are times you won't see eye to eye especially considering the age gap. Point is if they are good parents they will always be there for you.

Well let's put it this way. If it's your house and you pay for the roof over your head, then your parents should show some respect for your way of living, but if you are living in their house then you should shut the fuck up and deal with it, or leave and get your own place.. :thumb:

Your parents are your parents. Love them. Treat them with the respect they deserve.

But, if they disrespect you and your beliefs, feel free to give them the boot until they can respect your own beliefs in your own house. Hell, you had to put up with their stuff until you were 18 or so , right? They should pay you the same respect.

Im a grown ass man. I will do as I please in my own houes (within the laws).

And this whole argument about what if they died tommorrow doesnt hold water. You cant go around kissing everyones ass because you may never see them again. Be polite. Show respect. But dont be a pushover. If need be.. kick ass and take names.

I never said anything about kissing everyone's ass. I'm merely pointing out human frailty, that life should be treasured, and gifts considered. It is a gift to have people in your life who love you.
