Hi Everyone,
I just finished up my senior year of college football and have no need to be 270 pounds anymore. I recently tore my meniscus in my knee and can not work out, my leg will not straghten out at all. The doc figures it will be a few months before I'm ready to work out again. Anyways, what kind of diet should i start on to lose weight while not working out? I'm sure some of you have some great ideas that I would love to hear. I really don't know a lot about diets and trying to lose weight, since I'm so used to eating a lot to maintain and gain. I'm sure some of you have some great diet plans, and I would love to hear them. Thanks

I think you would be better to wait to lose weight until you can workout again. Losing weight with out lifting is setting yourself up to lose a lot of muscle. This happens because when in a deficit your body will tap into stored fat or muscle to use as energy. Well if you're not working out and telling your body "hey I'm using my muscles" then it will just break them down. Hence the term "skinny fat". that would be someone who is small in weight and size, but is mostly fat and not muscle.

If anything I would just maintain especially with and injury, your body needs the food to help it work to repair itself.

Thanks for the replys. Reelbigfish, you are right. I don't want to lose any of the muscle at all, just want to lose the belly and some of the fat.

I would think that you would want to keep your protein intake high still, and only eat a moderate amount of carbs. Don't skimp on them by any means, but realize that because you're not using crazy amounts of energy right now, you don't need to eat nearly as many as you did. What types of things did you eat when training heavy?

I ate a lot of whatever i could afford. Steaks, chicken breast, lots of veggies and noodles or rice. I always had to eat a lot and eat often to maintain my weight, but now I have no need to eat that much, and I have never been in a situation where I have been trying to cut weight.
