I got a new training job at a 1 on 1 fitness studio (that will remain nameless) I got all the materials to take their certification test and was looking over some things was going to ask you guys what you think (because I do so value the opinions of the IM board members)

They have this exercise chart that lists what muscles are used (primarily and secondarily) and whether it is for mass or defining...this seems silly to me as I agree with most on this board that you don't "tone" muscle...it either grows larger or smaller..And of course when they list incline and decline movements they label the muscles used as upper and lower pecs...which has also been discussed here....What do you guys think??

Other than the fact that I'm going to disagree with the popular bullshit that most people have been fed, I think I'm going to love this job as I've loved talking about working out and helping everyone I know...the studio is brand new with flat screen tv's, xm radio, and brand new equipment (anyone ever put together a smith machine?? FUN!!)

you have two choices:

1) you can disagree and argue with them and tell them that their program is crap (I have gone that route before. Unless you have some smart managers to listen to you, it really doesn't pan out).

2) you can just study what you need to know to pass the test. pass it and then go and train people the proper way and just be prepared to defend your programs when you are asked questions as to why you are doing certain things certain ways.

#1 would be oh so tempting.

I did. I got thrown out of a big class/workshop because the teacher was saying all this bullshit and then I kept correcting her and then I told her that she wasn't that smart and that I could teach the class better then her. I was ased to leave and they were going to fire me but the manager at the gym fought for me.
That was the last class I had to take through the company and the manager had me do education for the trainers at our gym only. haha

Would you have done that if you and the manager didn't really know each other well?

Nice. I wish I would really like to witness you tear someone a new one in real life. I have a feeling that these forums don't do you justice when it comes to tearing people a new asshole on the topic of exercise physiology.

My manager was one of my good friends....but, he was only the manager this past year. I did this a few years ago when we were both still trainers. When I got thrown out of the class, the teacher called the national head of personal training and told him I should be fired and he called my manager at the time. I figured I was going to be fired. I was getting ready to start applying to a different gym. The only thing that saved me was that it was near the end of the month and they had a big quota to meet and I was in the top 5 as far as most sessions performed per week at the gym and top 40 country wide so they couldn't fire me and take a hit like that, knowing that my clients wouldn't have a trainer so the gym wouldn't get any of those sessions pulled and they would get no money. So, the general manager of the gym (not even the training manager) stepped in and saved my job (even though he really didn't like me so much) because in the end, all my sessions would save his job (hehehe).

actually it is not that bad. I don't drop shit on people like I do on these forums. I usually do it here just for fun. In real life I don't do that shit. I only dropped it on this lady because she was such a bitch and she was really really arrogant and she had it coming. I was just the one that gave it to her.

that's awesome....

I was talking to my manager yesterday about further education and he said he'd pay for any cert I want....I mentioned ISSA and he was like "yeah that's like 600 bucks....I'll pay for it once we have a solid client base"

I can also get into a management training program right away too....so I'm going to milk this for all it's worth...management experience + a few really good certifications = lots of opportunities....

Agreed. I like the ISSA, ACSM, NSCA, and NASM certifications. You need a 4 year degree to take the ACSM or NSCA-CSCS certifications though.
