i remember reading in the mid 1970's that frank zane(3time mr. olympia) was consulting all his doctors and dietitians and what he said was if you do everything the correct way... meaning the big three. training very very hard, eat perfect, and sleep well, you'll put on 7 pounds of pure muscle a year.. i think he has better people in his camp guiding him than some dude at the gym saying he put on 20#'s of muscle in 2 months. tell that clown to lift up his shirt and you'll see the 20#'s.
bottom line is, do the big 3, and results will come .. slowly, but they will come.

way back when i first started working out, I gained about 20lbs in three months. Some was fat obviously; i was skin and bones, but i was happy to take some fat along with the muscle gains. I walked into my local gym, opened an account and went straight to the personal training desk, picked out the biggest trainer and paid him to show me how to get big like him.

His routine for me in a nutshell:

1. workout 4-5 days a week
2. only compound movements (squats, deads, bench, rows...)(notice there is no curls or leg extensions)
3. heavy heavy heavy weight (with proper form)
4. eat eat eat. eat like i have never eaten before. eat 6+ times a day including protein drink the moment i wake and a slow digesting protein when i go to bed. (make it clean a possible too. my trainer had me eating chicken breasts, brown rice, egg whites, and anything else i could stuff in my mouth along those lines)
5. sleep well and often

that's it. all you hard gainers starting out, stop making it more complicated then it really is. stick to the basics and make it consistent.

I'm sure most people here put on more than 7lbs of pure muscle in their first year.

No bullshit I gained 15 lbs in a month when I was on my last bulking cycle. went from 150 to 165... I'm gaining definition back and still at 162. I was taking mass XXX shakes(has 50 grams of protein and over 1000 calories if taken with milk) 2 times a day, creatine, and eating chicken, potatos, full pizzas by myself, and pretty much anything I could put my hands on. Along with good training.I benched 200 lbs which is as high as I've ever benched. Maybe not good compared to some of your benches, but I was happy with it.........Idid get a little bit of a gut, not a horrible one... my chest and arms definitely got bigger.

Shots of EVOO.

i remember putting too much of that in one of my shakes.

i threw up 2 hours later with my mouth, throat and lips just cover in the shit

but yea evoo is the shit for calories

Seriously - olive oil is the easiest way to get those calories in. Not only is there about 500 calories in a quarter of a cup of the stuff, but the type of fat in olive oil helps your boys turn cholesterol into testosterone.

Knock back a shot of olive oil at bedtime with a shake, another one sometime in the day. There's a pound a week.

I would. The left side of my body weighs 125. :D

You need to eat clean and often. Like Gaz outlined...Lean and Green (lean protein sources and green leafy veggies) ...and maybe not so much on the pasta and other cheap carbs, unless the timing is right in conjunction with your w/o's. Even then I'd opt for slow burners. The main thing is to develop a diet that you can live with, WITHIN THE GUIDELINES, of what is considered "clean". If you get into that over-the-top suppliment game....drinking EVOO, snorting Flax Seeds, Blended Rocky shakes with raw eggs, all that crazy stuff..... you'll lose interest quickly.

I respectfully disagree with the clean recommendation, in this specific case. The kid needs calories, PERIOD. The only food I'd avoid is transfat (which isn't really a food anyway) and I'd load up on cream, butter, olive oil, and white starches rather than whole grains - whole grains will fill this kid up too much and he needs to pack in the calories.

Oh, Oh, Okay...So you just show up after, what? Six months? to Dis my advice? pffft, like you know something or something. :p :D

Yeah, I thought about the statement after I made it. Just never got around to editing. At 125, he could probably live off of ice cream and it wouldn't hurt him. Seems I tend to push my agenda out of habit.....so I won't drop the ball. ;)

Hahhahaha thanks DaMayor, for taking it so well. ;)

We all have our own agendas, it's hard not to. For me, the thought of someone having trouble GAINING weight makes me, well, jealous enough to commit murder, but in the interest of my non-incarcerated future, not to mention the greater good of getting this kid JACKED, I have to set these feelings aside.

Even though I want to kill him (to the OP, nothing personal. I'm dieting and it makes me bitchy. To the rest of the board, yes, that's right, I diet a lot. Bite me. )

My coworker on the rig has trouble gaining weight. I recommended the Olive oil thing to him and he gained 8 lbs in a month. Granted, it probably wasn't all muscle, but for a guy whose weight hadnt fluctuated in 10 years, it was a pretty big difference, and he was thin enough that any fat he gained looked better anyway.

Eat, Lift, Eat, Sleep, Repeat. Your problem is much more diet related than routine.
