my coach is online and i have nothing but positive things to say about him. what's funny about that? some of the best coaches in the business are strictly online.

do your research, check credentials and the results of past clients if you can. open the lines of communication and ask whatever questions you may have beforehand. by far the best decision i have ever made in relation to training/diet.

I just fail to see how you can justifying paying for it. How can someone judge your workouts or motivate you from over the internet. Surely all they can do is advise on diet and maybe tweek your training according to the feedback you give them. Well the way i see it is there are many experienced people online who will do that for you for free.

I know serveral guys who have be in the business for many years. They charge a fortune for personal training session and yet if i send them copy of my diet an training they will quite graciously look over it and give me feedback for free. So how does your PT differ from this?

why not just learn and ask questions and do it for yourself?

exactly that.

I give out advice and answer questions online, but creating a customized diet and training program for someone takes a lot of work, and I would not do it for free. Not to mention talking to them daily, tweaking the diet and training, creating new work-outs daily, etc.

some people like having more guidance, personal attention, and they want to hear what they consider to be expert advice from one source.

true, i guess i was always just a do-it-you-selfer...its why i fix my own car.

maybe i'm just cheap...who knows

i am jewish :D

you can pay me and I will coach you.

I would use an online coach only if:

1)I were relatively knowledgeable.
2)I lived in a place where there were no live trainers.
3)It is substantially cheaper.

Diet is cut and dry, I would have no problem using someone online for that. Training is a little different. An online trainer can give you rep, rest, and set parameters and those are easy enough to follow. Online, you cannot have form critiqued and that is as important as the other parameters. I imagine that well over 75% of the people who read this site don't bench properly, even though the info is there. And that is for an exercise as common as the bench press.

same here...but many people like their hand held.

holding peoples hands pays my bills.

Provided the person knows how to train properly (technique wise) it would be pretty easy to draw up a diet and write a training program for them. If it was a complete newbie that needs exercise instruction I think they would be better off finding a trainer in a gym that is qualified to help them learn exercise form.

true, but many trainers will not give much diet and nutrition advice because of the risk of a law suit if they are not a registered dietician.

i don't have a PT. i have a nutrition/training coach.

like I said....a good example...she knows how to workout. so she has a coach that puts together her diet and training and she doesn't really need someone to show her how to do exercises (at least the basic ones).

learning is a part of the process. sure, i could devise my own training and diet. i think it's easier to put together a training program than to fine tune nutrition as you go which my coach specializes in. my thoughts are this, i needed a coach for two things: #1 - if i could have achieved my personal goals by myself, i would have already and i can admit where i need assistance. #2 - he'll be doing all my pre-comp stuff. at this point in the game he knows what my body responds to and what it doesn't and is better equiped to get me where i need to be/fine tune pre-competition.

as a bonus, he's become a great friend. post-comp i'll be doing my own stufff but if i need help i know i can go to him in the future.

I am fairly experienced as far as weightlifting goes and I did create my first cuttting diet right here and people were very helpful. In 20 weeks of cutting i lost 23lbs and got down to 11-12% BF. THen i stopped working out due to circumstances in my life. I really want that six pack. I am not sold on swolecat or iron addict - but they seam really reputable. Especially iron addict because he writes alot of articles and talks to you on the phone. I know the diet i put together worked but my diet became to routine and so did the workouts. And sometimes on these forums everybody has their own opinions and somethimes you dont know who is right. be it volume vs. HIT - LISS Vs. HIIT. when to do cardio - and how many times a week. my goal right now is to get down to 8%BF and retain as much muscle as possible. then gain about 15lbs of muscle. So i have been researching the online trainers and i have to admit i am intrigued but the money is stopping me. If anybody can help on my cutting conquest it will much appreciated.

the first thing you need to do is get your diet under control.

it's a shame how many people use borderline horrible form in the gym on most exercises.

This is true, but often times there is no one right answer. There may be different opinions, each with some very valid points and arguments. It's up to you to decide who is 'right' for what you need.
