President Bush's 'biggest regret': I was unprepared for war

Um. i think you are out of your damn mind to think this. If we all of a sudden did not have oil tomorrow it would be much more than an inconvenience. we can not supply the needed electricity without it. so your computer is done. banking stops. you don't have access to money. basic food stuffs will no longer be available to the populace. i hope you have food storage and candles.

Exactly. This is not just conjecture either... report out this morning I saw that Israel's attack on Iran is imminent... The first thing Iran said they would do is shut down that passage...

Very few US power plants run on oil, Hawaii would be it hard since 70% of our power plants are run on diesel but we have Biomass facilities, an overflow of garbage to burn and tons of sunshine so we could make a come back quick. They have facilities that can convert garbage to a burnable oil, and they have one that is converting oil from turkey/chicken scraps from a Tyson plant. Every city can divert power to their most necessary areas. Oil isn't going to just suddenly vanish even if all the rest of the world stops selling it to us....we'll have plenty of time to make changes while living off of our reserves and Anwar.....I think we should do it anyway all the money we'd save from importing oil could pay for a complete reconstruction of our energy structure.....

that wasn't the scenario. the scenario had us with no oil tomorrow. no gas except whats in our cars currently. you think we could build the infrastructure for these other facilities without oil today? i think you are a little off in your optimism, but thats fine

My answer was vague, because the question was silly.

I think the difference in our thinking is the scope of the problem. I was thinking long term. Short term would be much different. Yes, I know, supply lines would stop. The economy would be a train wreck that would make the great depression seem like a speed bump. People in the cities would starve and break out in rioting and pillaging for food and supplies. Emergency services would not be able to operate without fuel for vehicles. Government services wouldn't be able to pay their employees so no police. Even nuclear plants couldn't operate without transportation of supplies, manmpower, and waste. There would be total chaos. There are over a thousand other problems i could think of over the coarse of a day that would happen.

It would take decades to even begin to develop a structured system to accommodate the remaining population. Many people would resort to farming for food. The educational systems would break down and the beloved information age would be put on hold for at least 50 years probably much more while new methods of handling supply chains are developed.

Would humans die out? No. Our survival as a species is not dependent on oil. Our lifestyle is.

Well excuse me for thinking realistically instead of your sudden all oil is vaporized by alien nanobots scenario......

WTF? i didn't come up with the rules of this little what if. besides in either case neither one is realistic. that wasn't the intent of the original question. even in your scenario I feel you are a little too optimistic about our ability to ramp up to an infrastructure weaned off of oil
