I have a hard time sleeping right after consuming alot of protein. Seems like my mind is racing, and I can't sleep. I have always eaten starchy and sugary foods before bed, and I'm sound asleep then. I've read a couple of articles that protein wakes the body and mind up, and doesn't allow it to sleep.

The thing is that starchy and sugary foods before bed inhibit the release of HGH, and I don't want to do that. And I know I should have some protein in my body to put it in a anabolic state, but then no sleep  ?

Anybody had this problem?

I have the same problem and I really dont feel it has to do with eaitng protein before bed. If any thing your body has aminos to utilize for Tryptophan production actually helping you sleep.

RE: HGH production, I feel that it is the exact opposite...flooding the body with carbs/insulin before bed should promote HGH production.

How so? In the face of an insulin spike the body can not release growth hormone. They aren't present in the blood at the same time. Somatostain will supress growth hormone release.

Ill try to be more specific, this is how i am interpreting it anayways.

  • Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) is a hypothalamic peptide that stimulates both the synthesis and secretion of growth hormone.
  • Somatostatin (SS) is a peptide produced by several tissues in the body, including the hypothalamus. Somatostatin inhibits growth hormone release in response to GHRH and to other stimulatory factors such as low blood glucose concentration.
  • Ghrelin is a peptide hormone secreted from the stomach. Ghrelin binds to receptors on somatotrophs and potently stimulates secretion of growth hormone.

Yes, but those are just the defenitions form the particular web page. Somotostin will supress the release of growth hormone. I can't figure out what you are trying to say with that graph. Maybe I am stupid.

Hmm yes I'm not sure if starchy and sugary foods inhibit HGH, but it sure as hell gets u sleeping. So, I guess we have to research this a bit more

heres a real good site: http://www.13.waisays.com/

It doesn't mention anything about HGH though, which I'm looking for.

I think you guys are too paranoid about HGH release, the body is not that susceptible that a few foods would compromise the release of the hormone.

The reason that the sugary carbs help you to get to sleep is because at any moment there are 4 amino acids fighting to cross the blood brain barrier (or maybe it was three.....bee awhile since I did this stuff since I have been reading more about trainig and exercise science lately). One of these is albumin which tryptophan binds too. Those two together are to big to make it across everytime. Once you eat a buch of sugary carbs the insulin spike is so great that it pools the other amino's that are trying to go across the blood brain barrier into the cells. Allowing the bigger amino profile of albumin and tryptophan to cross into the brain. The large amount of tryptopham then helps to induce a sleep like state due to the hormonal release it will cause. Like I said.....it's been awhile for me and this crap. Anyone want to confirm that for me. :)

read what you wrote

try to eat what makes your mind think and work before 5/6pm. your own body and mind is telling you what works for you. use yorur protein during the day when your body uses it for exactly what you nedd it for. use moderate to sluggish foods not high in fat or sugar later. my mind races too after good protein and things my body needs. just give it to yourself at a more functionally applied time. if you deprive yourself of these things all day, they will be your cravings on your mind that you did not satisfy during the time of the day they could be most utilized. picas are the way of your body telling you what it needs. people have been known to eat dirt because o mineral requirements thei body does not receive due to regional diets. step away from what you have been told to eat and listen to yourself. it is hard to allienate diet up bringing. it is hard to feed yourself when regional diet tells you different.sit down meals when we all ate the same is why people had an earlier death and illness rate. now with the food market, we can feed individually diets and still share meals. IT IS OK IF WE EAT AT DIFFERNT TIMES OF THE DAY IF IT WORKS FOR US. (and be connected through food and understanding of the respect of blending different foods, different people, same meal). blood vessels, health, growth, body types all are different. we talk about how special we are for are differences, but when it comes to diet, times to eat, what we share at these times ,we conform to ideas that have long past as for as making our intake as specialized as our feelings.(all the same principal to me. look at the flags. write them out. see what you are saying.)

i have read

i read all the responses. remember, once you factor in your health, your life, your stressors, and your past history that makes you, that is the curve to all the data we know. with health ,sometimes,we need to figure how these how these catalists effect the known factors for each.
