Protein intake on low sodium?

Looking at my turkey burgers and etc, I see that I'm about 200% USRDA sodium intake levels. I am trying to help a guy out getting some protein into his diet, and he has to watch sodium due to blood pressure. He's about 6'3" and 205, but high BP runs in the family.

Good sources of low sodium protein?

Tuna is about as high as everything else I eat, and he isn't a tuna lover anyway.
 
That is a good question. I curious about that, too. Sodium is a beotch!! Have you ever looked some some the labels...OMG :eek: I buy sodium free then add a little to taste. I don't know how you would get low sodium meat?? Hmmm.
 
I dont know much aboud sodium, I never ever add salt to my food (dont even really like soy sauce anymore). I like pepper but was never a salt freak.

Anyhow, sodium control is something I'd like to find out about, this guy is about to get off meds for it because without increasing the dose every so often your body just gets used to the drugs he is using, so its worthless. He is going to try to controll sodium on his own.
 
You can buy low sodium tuna as far as that's concerned.

And w/ meat/chicken/fish, etc...it doesn't have enough to worry about as long as you get UNPROCESSED meat...even ground beef, turkey, etc will have a higher sodium content then a natural cut. Mmake sure you avoid anything that is pre-seasoned/pre-packaged...such as burgers or marinated/seasoned chicken. Read the labels.

Remember that eggs are rather high in sodium. Whey protein is relatively low in sodium. You will never totally eliminate sodium (and shouldn't) but if you stay away from the processed meats you should be okay :)
 
Also...I've notice some variance from brand to brand in whey.....check labels.

Ok, so this is a processed meat thing, shucks.
 
Eggs, tuna, and processed meats are much higher in sodium than natural, fresh meats. Fresh beef, chicken and fish only has about 60mg per 3oz serving compared to 50mg per egg white.
 
Even the low sodium version of tuna...which is what I use...still has about 400mg in a can.

I would stay...stick to fresh chicken, beef, and fish. Maybe some whey but other than that most sources are high in sodium.

Well I wouldn't call that low sodium then, lol. Mine has only 50!

WOW...50mg in the entire can....You're in ON so I assume I can probably find the same products here in NS....what kind (brand) of tuna is it and where have you seen it available?

If I can find it I'll surely make the switch!
 
The 12oz can of tuna I have here with me, is 750mg sodium total for 65g protein, ouch. Thats half the USRDA sodium intake.

Can't remember the brand...don't have it w/ me...but I get it at Loblaws...you should be able to get it. I'll let you know when i get it.
 
Thanks...we don't have Loblaws here but we have it's subsidiary company...Superstore...basically they look exactly the same and carry the same products...just different names for different regions of the xountry. I'll look again...but if you remember the name brand pleae let me know.
