I do them every once in a while after squats and I've heard from a few people (anecdotal) that doing this will "expand your ribcage." Is there anything to support this or is it just a myth?

I'd have to see some hard factual evidence they do anything to expand the rib cage which is a fixed/permanent bone structure. I utilize them as a chest exercise and provides a great stretch.

Never heard any real evidence in support of this, but I do like pullovers as a stretching movement.

omg I can't believe people are still saying that...that's an old bodybuilding myth from the 70's...lol

the pullover would be a stretch-muscle movement for the lats, pecs. do sissy squats for the quads to stretch them.

i do db pullovers to work the lats as a finishing exercise heavy weight high intensity and strict form and it hasnt stretched my ribcage, but alot of 70s- 80s said it worked, i dont know. but how did all them be able to get the arnold look to there rib cages? who knows i dont. but it does help the lats out alot, dopnt know about chest although it does give my chest some blood i feel when iam done. but i wouldnt use it for chest imho.

i think the combination of big oblique muscles and wide lats makes your rib cage look bigger and thats what arnold had

Hey, it's not my myth. :p

I'm as confused by it as you, just wondering if someone else had an explanation.

I'm at a loss to the connection between pullovers and squats. I just feel pullovers can be effective as a stretching movement, but I don't buy the whole deal about enlarging the rib cage. I wonder what started the myth in the first place.

iam clueless. but it makes sense to wat the one guy said had big lats, to make the cage look bigger. i today understand why none have that look visceral swelling from so much gear and hgh, slin? dont know.

Iv read that while doing this u realy inhale a big deep breath and dont exhale till u finish the reps ful ROM it expands the rib cage and the muscle tissues inbetween the rib cage gets utilized more helping to fill the chest/torso out n rib cage

it doesn't and there is no medical study to support these statements and there never has been. this is one of those very old bodybuilding myths that just won't die. just like squatting stunts the growth and bodybuilding stunts the growth...LMAO!

pullovers will no more develop your rib cage like Arnold's just like doing Sergio Olivia's workout won't get your biceps peaked like his...it's called genetics!

I agree. I think this one is something that every lifter hears at some point. Strange how these things stay alive. Wishful thinking maybe...

ill agree as i havent the clue where all this expanding the ribcage started either. its stupid if you think about it for a moment.i never even remembered this rumor until i read this thread to be honest.
