At what distances was pistol qualification done? I have a tall tale telling friend claiming outrageous pistol qualification distances.

what's he claiming?

In the Navy I had sharpshooter pistol and marksman rifle. If I recall farthest pistol target was 15-20 yards. I also qualified for lowlight and flashlight, as well as breach and clear on vessels with a shotgun, learning how to use steel bulkheads to bounce shots around corners. I only got to do VBSS three times before we got a new division chief who convinced our CO high security personnel shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms.

I know he's full of shit, he's claiming 50, 75, and 90 yards. With a pistol. Like I said, I know he's full of shit but all I can find are current distances of 7, 15, and 25 yards.

I guess it would depend on what he was qualifying for but, I can't readily think of anything that would require pistol shots from those distances. In the Air Force I had to qualify to carry a side arm when I was selected to be a classified courrier. The furthest distance was 25 yards.

Last I remember we had to qual with a .45 and the distances we're very minimal, a piece of cake after you had to qual with a m16.

Those distances were 25',7' and 15 feet in that order. IDK if this has changed since then, though?

50 yrds lol all the qualifications goes by 5ft for a pistol. 90 yards lol could you even see the target with a pistol at 90? what do you aim 10 feet over the target. We shoot at maybe 100 plus feet with our pistols and do contests for that for fun and that is hard as fuck... I can barely hit 50% at that distance. No way i could qualify for it. Unless they let you shoot 1911's with trigger jobs that are flawless so there is zero change of trigger pull lol.

I'm on your side with regard to the OP but, around here, pistol quals go by yards.

My tall tale telling friend was responding to my miracle shot on Sunday when I was at an outdoor range. I hit a beer can at 82 yards. It took me 5 shots to be able to get the proper aim point and even then considering my bad shooting habits it's a miracle I hit it. At that range the sight would cover a complete 12 pack standing on end. I had to aim about 8ft above and 5 feet to the left. Did that with my 1911. So, virtually no skill involved. 99% luck.

His response when I told him about the shot? "That's a pretty big target at that range. In the Corps we had to qualify at 50, 75 and 90 yards." Came close to caving in one side of his head with a good solid punch.

i have a trick shot we do with new guys... If the day is perfect there is a 200 yard shot thats pretty easy to hit. We spent ALL day trying it. We have a line of clay pigeons that we shoot with the AR's at 200 yards. one of us will walk out with a pistol and start picking them off. It BLOWS peoples minds. Basically what happens is we know exactly where to aim for height. The clays are all set up about a foot across. So as long as we get the height right we have a decent chance at hitting one. My buddy can pick them off pretty well. People dont realize that we say there for hours moving the clays up and down the hill (there on a rack) so we can aim at this rock and have that be the target to hit the clays.

It makes a good betting game too. Bet some one 5 $ a clay.

At those distances he's full of shit

he's totally full of shit. pretty much anything greater than 25+ meters is machine gun territory.

When I was in it was 15 yards. Combat pistol courses the ranges varied, but never more that 30. We non-quailifing trained for chest and head shots at 50 yards from a kneeling and/or supported position.

The AMU, that is the Army Marksmanship Unit, shoot B2 bullseye targets at 25 and 50 yards. But that was target shooting.

I've offered to go to the range with him quite often but he never seems to have the time. :hmmm:

Based on his b.s. I'd say somebody already beat you to the punch..............literally. :bash:

25 yards Max, if you have to shoot some one with a 45 or baretta at a longer distance than that your in deep shit

Oh, I just love hearing the warriors without a clue. My favorite was the 20 something, 300 pound jelly roll with coke bottle glasses that told me he was a former SEAL Team 1 member, but was asking me for help zeroing his rifle. Because they "didn't use this type of scope in the SEALS".

Should have slapped him.

Or walk away, go home drink some beer. I mean unless they have a rifle or something more powerful.

odds are he was a MS or a BM and never touched a weapon after bootcamp.

25 yards is a long shot with a handgun. Maybe he was thinking shotgun distances. I know the police have to hit a 100 yard target with 12 gauge slugs in some states.

No, he specifically stated 50, 75 and 90 yards. With a worn out, clapped out service 1911. I just smiled and was thinking how I wished I had my 1911 with me to pistol whip him with it.

Probably an SK, PC or YN, maybe an ABF, huffing too much JP5 made him hallucinate he was a SEAL.

re: JP5 - that is one smell I don't miss.

Naw, if you ever seen the guy I was talking about, there was absolutely no way he wasn't a SEAL. You can be a SEAL in a video game, right? I really doubt that he was in any branch of the service. Just another johnny wanna be trying to build himself up to compensate for the lack of self confidence, self esteem and little dick syndrome. I wished we had cell phone cameras back then. He got a look at my M1 Garand and literally started dancing a little jig almost peeing down both legs. Shouldn't have let him touch it. But because he asked, and was almost pleading, plus I was afraid he would start crying making a scene if I said no; so I made his day. I let him run a clip through the rifle. He didn't hit a thing, but I am almost sure he ejaculated when the clip popped out with the ping sound it makes. Now he could run to his gamer boy buddies online and tell them how he fended off hordes the Huns with the trusty M1 Garand.

Again, I should have slapped him.
