I know a lot of people that run like 5 miles a day and have no body fat. I also had a teacher that ran 7 mile before school everyday and he was like 50 and solid muscle.

What is the best way to work up to somthing like that?
Should it be a run or a jog?

I heard this is a good way to work legs(or lightweight, multiplereps squats) too becuase doing squats with alot of weight just bulks them up.

BTW...I have been going to this site for about a week and a half now and everyone has been very helpful with advice about all types of things. Thanks! :thumb:

it depends what your goals are..."most" people will lose a significant amount of LBM if involved in regular distance running.

distance running and weight training do not compliment each other...

Yup, running is great but like LAM said, it doesn't go well with putting on or keeping LBM.

Well, right now I am more interested in losing BF than gaining muscle. I am actually fairly musclular right now but I hat the layer of fat over them.

Once I lose down.....I may start a wieghtlifting program again if I want to get any bigger (muscle wise)

Why not do both ? How can you expect to even maintain mass WITHOUT a weightlifting program ?

There is nothing wrong with running 20 mins 3* a week. I think I get better results running for 20 mins than I do riding a bike for 60. msoper why cant you lift and run at the same time. Once you start adding muscle your body will burn more calories helping with fatloss.

My problam right now is that I am working and I have summer classes.......I dont have much time for anything. That is why for now I wanted to just lose BF and slim down by running or somthing so that what muscle I had NOW would show through. Then in the fall when I go back to purdue I can go frequently to the fitness center and begin my weight traingin gain. Why keeping up my diet and exercise fo course.

Is this a bad idea?

"fairly muscular" ???

no offense msoper but with the stats that you, gave currently your LBM is around 130 lbs at 6'0 tall. that is VERY light for your height.

Hey biggin what is your waist size? I cant see you being overweight at 160lbs at 6'. I would say hit the gym before you hit the trails. As for time if you are focused you finish working out in an 1 hour and 20 min. That includes 30 min of cardio.

Non taken. =)

I am not a hulk but I am naturally pretty strong and muscular without much work. Maybe Im not that muscular but I look large because I have a large bone structure and layer of fat. People thing I work out when I actually havent "weight lifted" for months. Just have done alot of yard work and ran a bit.

I told this to my bro and I'll tell you now ....

cardio ALONE, will NOT lower BF without u becoming smaller !!

Look at track athletes. Anything over 200m runners and they are STICKS !!

only reason sprinters are big is due to sprinting being anaerobic (like weightlifting)

Also, you need SOME mass to cut down too. Look at ectomorphs, at lot of dem have low BF% but do they look muscular ??

Sub-Zero...that's how my roommate is. he's 6'4 190-195 lbs at like 7% body fat but he is a RAIL !!!

he has absolutely no muscle or muscle tone at all.

I see what you mean. I need to do a bit of everything to do it right huh? And come to think of it....the friends I know that are solid muscle are not very "muscular". You can see the muscles better but they are not very large. However, these ppl are extremely strong. There muslces dont look very big at all but they can lift alot.

But then again....I dont want to be a stick but I also dont want to be a lumbering hulk either. Hmmmm...

EAT MAN EAT !! Don't your mommy feed you ? ......j/k

Then again, me being an meso-endo it's a BITCH getting lean

I'm 5'7", 182lbs with 15ish % BF yet I STILL bitch about being too small .....hehe

Well, you can lift to gain strength and mass coming along. Depends on your priorities. Remember, the more muscle mass you have the more calories u burn even when sittin down doing nothing.

Strength is also more mental than physical, I mean bruce lee could lift more than ur average 200lb bodybuilder.

Also, bulking doesn't mean ur gonna gain tons of fat. As long as your diet is clean you can gain VERY little fat. Also at ur age, all you need is a clean diet to be lean

msoper...getting to be a "lumbering hulk" does not happen by accident. it takes years and years of dedicated dieting and training to get to that point, and for many never...

for now I would say to get your body fat down to a reasonable level like 10% then go on a clean-bulking cycle to add some quality muscle to your body...

Amen brother.

You don't just pick up a weight and BOOM ur big. Even a 10lb muscle gain can take months, even a whole year if u've been training for some time
