which way should you be holding the bar, overhand or underhand? and where do pull-ups fit best in a routine?

Personally I like the overhand grip; I feel my muscle is working harder.

Do them both! I do the underhanded ones sometimes on Bi day to warm them up!

I've always done them overhand. Gotten pretty good that way, too.

I like to do a close grip palms facing eachother. and on back day

I like palms out, wide grip. I feel palms in way too much in my biceps and less in my back. I do them on back/bi day.

pull-ups

Overhand, wide grip, done first on back day. This is the hardest way but the most effective. Close grip for those days when your not up to par. Or close grips work well at the end of a workout. I agree that they are a great way to warm up for biceps also.

i like underhand the best, but do some overhand stuff on a machine, since i can't do enough reps yet of my own body weight

whatever you do, dont go behind your head !!

By doing underhand (supsinated curl grip) you put your biceps in their strongest position so they have less chance of giving out before your lats have been "sufficiently" stimulated.

However, if you can strap weight round your waist and do wide-overhand grip for reps i'm gonna be mightily impressed. Not many folk can manage one rep with bodyweight!

Very impressive..... at 200lbs with a 45lb plate for reps....

I like to start with over hand 3-4 sets then a set underhand since they are much easier... 3-0-3 tempo

Then move onto Deads and then Rows

I can do them for reps with 90 lbs on my waist.

Can I get a cookie too?

175 as of last attempt.

Yay!!

Nah, no cookies here. But if you really want to cash in on that kiss i owe you Scotty...

Matt, for you i'll be willing to rip off your left arm and hit you with the soggy end.

But then I couldn't do pullups!

Might I ask why not ... I like to just 'touch' the bar with my neck ...
makes me slow down at the top point and doesn't allow me to swing up as I see most people do.
(in order to avoid some serious neck-crackling action).

Will this cause shoulder damage ? ('til today, I'm yet to experience any pain during this exercise - holds wood).

I also find that I tend to 'lean back' too much when doing chins with the bar in front of me.
Almost trying to touch the bar with my n*pples. Enlighten me!

Can be tough on the ole' rotators.

Some people swear by behind the head work.

I use to do them behind the neck all the time but learned to do them to the front about 4 years back and now it bothers me to do them to the back.
Guess it depends on the person.
