I was wondering if I should first get muscle mass on a certain body part then define it or is it the other way around??The first one makes sense to me becasue i cant shape something i dont have right?

Right or wrong that's what I'am going for.I've been on a bulk now for 3 months and plan on getting thru the holidays, then in Jan starting a cut thru the summer.Maybe someone like P-Funk could join in and shead some light.Good luck

Depends on how much fat you have. If you are just starting out, you should cut to lose the fat and then do a LEAN bulk. It is much easier to bulk after you have lost the fat than to bulk, gian more fat and then try to lose it all!!

Very true, I know a bunch of people who have "dirty bulked" and regretted it.

The only reason I "bulked" before I started "cutting" was the simple fact that controlling my diet was the hardest part for me. Working out is something I love to do, but watching what I ate wasn't. Once I started getting significantly stronger, then I had the urge to see what those muscles looked like under that fat. I think most people on this board would recommend the opposite.

Unless you are already QUITE lean, then I recommend cutting first. As someone already stated, cut first, then start adding calories gradually so as to add LBM without all the junk.

If you have fat and start bulking hardcore, you will put on more fat. Fat cells multiply, but never go away, only become smaller in size. The more fat cells you have (supposedly) the more efficient you become at storing fat and the harder it is to lose it. Also, as someone already stated, if you cut later you will have the fat that you started with, plus the fat you gained to lose...which will take longer. This means you will potentially have to spend MORE time cutting....which is time NOT spent growing, not to mention the fact that the longer the cutting phase the more LBM you can potentially lose. Worst case scenario...you bulk, put on some muscle and some extra fat...cut...lose all the fat and some muscle....oh look, now you are lean, but you NO more muscle than when you started your bulk!!

Also, from a mental and disciplinary standpoint, you can benefit from learning how to manipulate your diet EARLY on....better suiting you to be successful from here on in the iron game. You will be light years ahead of the curve!!! Who wouldn't WANT that??

I did a very dirty bulk when I first started and let me tell you I regret it every minute. I have been seriously like on a "cut" for a year and I still am not to where I want to be. You will put on weight easy fat and muscle but when it comes time to get cut it will be a pain in the rear.

I strongly suggest you get cut first then add muscle slowly like everyone is saying I know when I got the advice I was like "f that I want to get big" but that was me being stupid and not listening to people.

Well I had some good success with a dirty bulk, but I was also 21. And it didnt take anything for me to keep teh fat off. Now 4 years later I wont do it again.
