One thing with a straight arm you can go higher, and higher; the higher you go the more the traps take over. With your arm slightly bent, it is hardly possible to go beyond shoulder level. This also adds a contraction to the delts, that straight arming it does not. Another thing I do is, as I come up I rotate my forearm slightly, so my thumb points toward floor. This adds a little more intensity to the movement. :)

Yes this is what i was implying - apart from the thumb part: looks like you have been reading FLEX :D

Nope! just years of experimentation, and paying close attention to what's going on.

Just try it in the beginning of the workout and use the right weight. Dont try to be a wacko and use overly heavy weight. It'll mess you up pretty badly. I speak from experience.

Good Luck!:thumb:

Good advice again, at the gym today I concentrated heavily on the form by using 15lb dumbells and it felt good. By the third set I was was swinging the weights a little but it was mostly good form. Interestingly when I leant forward a little to concentrate on the back of the shoulders I found it much harder to lift up to parallel with the floor :hmmm:

Just out of interest what weight do you guys use for this exercise (not that i'm going to go up yet) i'm just curious.

This works well for me. When doing lateral side raises, I use 12-15 lb db. With locked elbows, bring both arms straight out (parallel to the ground). Hold one db in the straight out position while performing the reps with the other arm. Immediately switch arms. I do two sets of these twice a week.

I think I might even go down a couple of pounds, seeing as I've only been training for a couple of months maybe 15lbs is still too much for great form.

why are all of you guys concerned about what weight each other is using on this exercise? Everybody has different strengths adn what is heavy to one person might not be heavy to another. If the form is good who the hell cares what the weight is?? After reading the last few posts in this thread I slowly feel my brain leaking out my nose.

don't do em!

but i do front raises with 40lb.

hows your brain P? haha

I don't do them either. I hate wasting my time on things like that. The ony reason I would ever do them is if I need to bring some extra "flavor" to the medial delt and really isolate that area and skulpt it like Jay Cutler says to do...   ...then I will put on my little posing trucks and oil myself up and proclaim homosexuality.

my brain hurts.

Well i am going to put posing trunks on and oil myself up and i'am certianly not gay.

and in fact lateral raises if done correctly DO beef up your medials.

I tried them once and they just weren't comfy, so i never did them again.

I know. Being a BB'er has nothing to do with being gay. I have competed in it before. I just can't stand it. I find it terribly lame.

maybe Jay isn't the coolest guy in the house but at least he is a decent man and not arrogant etc. He has a good personality.

I'm not concerned about what weight other people are using I was just curious. Shame you couldn't make your valid point without the sarcasm.

And it is a shame that you couldn't realize WHO GIVES A FUCK
