Just wondering if anyone here smokes?

Apart from the obvious effects oh health, how does it affect you in a bodybuilding way?

curious....

It speeds your metabolism which is not what you want.
Just put up with a few weeks of hell for a much better life
ever after. Withdrawals can't go on forever.
Take it from me, you will never look back.

If you go to a Nicobate website with a forum they provide you
with an email partner you can write back & forth...
.. it might sound gay but it helps if you lack support.
My partner was a lady from England.
Also, everyone here in their right mind would encourage you.
Art.

There is NOTHING that drives me nuts more at the gym then seeing someone pumping iron and having the smell of nicotene fresh from their clothes.

Makes me sick, and it makes no sense.

Bump that!!

i smoke cig's and weed... and im a maniac in the gym.. also run a mile before i start with the weights

there has been Study's that it releases More testosterone in the blood... but that could be totally wrong.

^ What the hell kind of study is that? You do know that cigarettes cause impotency, right?

Peace.

LoL i have no idea but im serious i saw that... its probably not true but i will try to find the study.

according to a recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health, smoking can increase almost all the major androgenic hormones including DHEA, androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). All potent androgens that impact muscle growth.

The study, which examined a cross-section of 1,241 randomly sampled middle-aged U.S. men, compared hormonal levels of nonsmokers and smokers. The study made sure that weight and age were not a factor in the study results.

According to the study, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) was 18% higher in smokers, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) was 13% higher in smokers, androstenedione was 33% higher in smokers, testosterone was 9% higher in smokers, and DHT was 13% higher in smokers.

Now I certainly don't have to point out the health consequences associated with smoking, but it's nonetheless interesting to note that smoking positively impacts the key anabolic hormones favorable to muscle growth.

What many people don't understand about smoking is that it's not the nicotine that's bad but the hundreds of toxins that are in the smoke that are responsible for the numerous life threatening effects of smoking. It could possibly be that the nicotine is partially responsible for the increase in hormonal output and therefore could be constructively used for this purpose.

Mind you this is jumping the gun but still very interesting.

I heard it kill testosterone.

so basically chewing nicoret gum could speed up metabolism and increase test/hormone levels??

or is this at all proven

i have no idea if its proven... but christ.. its harvard for god sakes.. they aint stupid. But please everyone dont start smoking... its very bad for you... i only smoke 2-4 cigarettes a day.

who knows... i wouldnt recommend trying it tho

Makes since tho.. they say u gain 10 pounds when you quit smoking.. they used to blame that on the fact that you started eating more... maybe its because of Metabolism/Test decrease.

Ya, nicotine accelerates the metabolism, it being a stimulant. But the physical smoke messes up respiratory and pulmonary efficiency, which decreases the amount of oxygen travelling in the blood, which reduces the maximum intensity of muscular contraction possible. So, if you smoke, you can lift as much, and you can do it for as long. That???s how it was explained to me at least.

That Harvard study? I would love to see who funded that.

But come on, common sense people: Smoking. Is. Bad. For. You.

I USED TO SMOKE, but i decidet to stop because i took my training seriously, you'll quit if you really love this sport....i feel great now, i dont stink anymore and i can run a mile in under 8 minutes, try that while smoking!!!

did it... any other tests?

well it was 9 minutes... but close enough right? still.. smoking is bad for you.

IMO, cig smoking limits oxygen through out your body. Limiting oxygen levels isn't a good thing if you want to build muscle.

So add injecting nicotine to the list of things body builders inject into themselves to grow muscle at the expense of their health? The study didn't actually say nicotine was the cause of any of those benifits, maybe it's the smoke itself that causes it (body trying to repair itself from the damage smoking itself causes and not a result of a chemical reaction). Either way, nicotine is so addictive that it's hard to call it harmless regardless of what benifits it provides (and nicotine definitely has some negative things going for it just like any other stimulant or highly toxic substance). Still wouldn't surprise me if a pro bb admits to injecting nicotine.

ummm, nicotine comes in gum and patches, no reason to inject, as those methods of delivery are good enough. And yes bodybuilders do use nicotine, its a mild stimulant, nutrient repartitioner, and apettite suppressant. While being addictive, its pretty safe if used with a little common sense (ie if you have that addictive personality, don't use it or use it in short cycles)

Okay.....how about this discussion.

Positive effects of Nicotine

Anxiolysis - lowering of anxiety levels
Cognitive Enhancement - increasing/enhancing of the processes involved in thinking/knowing
Cerebrovasodilation - dilating of the blood vessels in the brain.
Neuroprotection - protecting the cells of the nervous system from certain types of degenerative disease. No one knows for sure quite why, but a history smoking seems to be protective against some of the neuronal loss in Alzheimer's disease
Analgesia - absence of pain while retaining the sense of touch, painlessness. One of the most promising uses of nicotinic drugs to date is as pain relievers.
Anti-psychotic - Literally, against psychosis (a type of insanity where the subject loses almost complete touch with reality). Interestingly, the correlation between a diagnosis of untreated psychosis and smoking is very high--it appears that somehow the psychotic person "knows" to self-medicate themselves.

Detrimental Effects of Nicotine

GI Distress - GI distress could be anything from an upset stomach to cramping of the bowels to constipation, etc. .
Hypothermia - lowering (hypo-) of body temperature (thermia) to below normal levels.
Emesis - Vomiting. An emetic is a substance which can induce vomiting, so nicotine is technically an emetic.
Hypertension - High blood pressure. Nicotine has an effect on the sympathetic nervous system (part of the nervous system involved in the classic "fight or flight" response), part of this effect is to cause the blood vessels within the body to constrict. Since, hopefully, the same amount of blood is still going through the body, this results in a net increase in the pressure within the system (think of what happens when you squeeze a garden hose). Why is it bad? The increase in pressure has to come from somewhere, and that's the heart which is trying to pump against this. Also, higher pressure can lead the "blowing up" of blood vessels, called aneurysms (think again of that garden hose and what happens if you hold it bent for too long).
Seizure - A sudden attack. Usually we associate seizures with conditions such as epilepsy. Seizures are caused by the loosening of the controls within the brain, allowing electrical activity to "run wild." Tremors and activities associated with seizures are the result of this uncontrolled electrical activity within the brain.
Respiratory Distress - As it sounds, causing distress within the respiratory system (the respiratory system includes the lungs and all the parts of the body related to the exchange of oxygen/carbon dioxide). Distress can come from problems caused within the lungs (nodules, degeneration) or by vasoconstriction (not enough time for the exchange to take place).

One effect that is not listed on this chart is that nicotine can stimulate the division of SCLCs (small cell lung carcinomas), a cancer cell line, by several hundred percent. This fact is interesting because it may explain why certain types of lung cancer grow so rapidly in smoking patients

No it isn't what you want. If you're trying to gain weight, (add muscle) speeding up your metabolism makes that much more difficult.

How old are you? I smoked when I was younger and could also perform at a relatively high physical level. Youth has a way of masking physical limitations caused by exterior elements. The true damage smoking causes will become VERY apparent when you get older and can no longer perform the physical activities you could when you were younger.

I used to be overweight, a light smoker, and an extreme pot smoker. I could run the mile in 7-7.5 minutes. I'm not defending smoking; I'm merely responding to your statement. Smoking is terrible for you, and I have since quit. Although I do like my ganja still. =)

im 19.. i've already quit smoking Cig's once... it lasted for 6 months and then i got stressed out (moved out and was on my own). So im smoking 2-4 cigarettes a day(that aint shit) and i smoke 2 blunts(weed) every day. And im doing very good... I have alot of stress on me that i cant deal with(pathetic i know) so i resort to occasional weed and Cigarette. The doc wants me on anti-anxiety meds... but im gonna deal through it without them. Couldnt imagine being calm and happy all the time... Bah

You're kidding yourself here because you're NOT dealing throught it without meds, you just chose ILLEGAL meds instead of the ones the doc wants you on. Knock off the adolescent attitude and start doing what's right for you. :finger: You'll be much better off in the long run and will have something to be proud of (quitting smoking) to help build your self confidence. Once you start building that up, everything else will come easier. :thumb:

P.S. Sorry to sound preachy but I think you might need it right now. ;)
