Does anybody squat with knee wraps? Is it good/bad? Recommended/not recommended?

Only

Only when I squat in the 3-5 rep range, heavy squats.

Not needed?

Not needed?
Not unless you don't care about your knee joints.
I squat 500 for 3-5 reps deep and would never think about doing that without my wraps.

IMO things like belts, wraps, etc are not needed unless you have a old injury, or are squatting very heavy loads.

I squat over 400 pounds and I never use a belt or wraps.
When I go up in weight and increase my squat I still won't use wraps.
I'm sure I could squat more if I used wraps.

...

But the sure way to have an old injury is not protecting yourself from injury.
So logical.
Why never use a belt or wrap UNTIL you injure a knee or back?
Thats caveman thinking.....

I've used wraps before and was able to squat more weight with them, but wasn't sure if it was the recommended thing to do.

Hey Game, could I alleviate some of the pain I was asking about last week if I used wraps for my heavy sets. Or would I be just masking the pain and doing more damage?

...

Albob,
I think you would alleviate some of the pain, might be masking more injury however. But also with better support to the knee would probably be preventing greater injury. I'd see a doc man, get a MRI!!!!! You blow that wheel out completely and your *ucked.

Yeah, I know. I'm still just delaying the inevitable.:(

heres my thing, if you can't squat it without belts and suits and wraps, you're not really squatting all the elastic and leather you have on your body is. You should just wait till you can handle it single ply, do some stuff to get your back stronger or your knees, or both. I Mean if you changed the situation a lil stuff like that would be un-acceptable, for example if you took the elastic off your body and put it between the bar and the ceiling, theres no way it would be acceptable. No one would count it as a real squat with a big rubber band between the bar and the ceiling, so why do they think its ok when its on your body, its all a big cop out to me.

You lost me here??? Why would you compare wraps and belts to a rubber band?????
I wear a belt when I am going heavy, to be honest the only reason is piece of mind. It is like a security blanket but it sure doesn't lift any weight.

..

I think hes trying to say wraps make you bounce up like a spring with 500 pounds on your back. *chuckle* The wraps don't lift the weight either. I drive that up with my quads. I don't wrap with 315 or lighter, heavier well I want to protect my knees. I'm not a fool thats going to blow a knee up with 515 on my back.

I use a belt when I'm near my max but as my max goes up so does the weight that I start using the belt.

Like charger said, its more peice of mind than anything, I'm not getting any younger and I don't want a lay off because of injury.

.....

Good point Scotty....

Also incorporate deadlifts to strength the back, another must.

OMG if you can't see how the elastic is basically take the weight off you and the belt is basically taking your back out of the movement than you're either really dense or blinded by how wraps and suit make you able to use more weight. If you took that elastic off your knees and out of your suit and put it between the bar and the ceiling (in the form of a rubber band) it would take the same amount of weight off you and would be unacceptable. I never said they make you bounce up like springs but if you can't use just muscle power to lift and you need a lil elastic to take the weight off you you're not really squatting it at all. The reason you would blow your knees without wraps isn;t cause 500 lbs magically will crush your knees even if you have the muscle power, its cause you don't have the muscle power to begin with and YOU CAN'T SQUAT THE WEIGHT, Get over your ego you're not doin anything special to your body by using wraps and loading 500 on a bar when the wraps and suit take some of the weight off you anyway. You're not really lifting 500 lbs. so if you max at 450 strapless and you manage to put enough straps and a thick enough suit on to take off 50 lbs and put up 500 you're still squatting 450 you're not doin anything special to your muscles. The only thing you're exercising is you ego, so get over it.!

Uh

Uh okay God.

Your entitled to your opinion Mesofreaky, and I agree to a point but as you get older, I'm sure you???ll come to appreciate the fact that using belts "WILL" help to prevent injury when lifting near max.

.....

CANCEL ALL POWERLIFTING RECORDS!!!!! They wore suits!!!!!!!

...

At 43, i'm wearing a belt and wraps. And I never said I could squat the same amount without wraps so not sure where freaky got that idea.

Prince ,
I moderate over at Musclemag and a couple of your members here got banned from there for flaming. I'll not reply to them further, think you will see from their behavior.

your an ex-mod and I wonder why?

I apologize prince for this inconvenience:)

Well

lets get the total story. I was asked to moderate again and politely told them no thanks. I'm not banned from the site as you are. Last post to you junior, just getting the total story out there.

I carry a lot of knowledge about this sport. Won 11 shows. I stand on my accomplishments. Yours?

I'm 17, weighing in at 180lbs. I haven't competed in any competitions yet.

Edit by Scotty: I'm getting a little tired of the flaming, this tread is about squatting, if you don't have anything to say about it then don't say anything.
