A new personal trainer the gym told someone that you should not do yoga before a strength-training workout because it will take 30 minutes for your muscle to start to benefit from the workout. The Pt give a strength training class after a yoga class, advicing my friend not to go to the yoga.
How true is this and how does the muscle react to each workout?

No do not stretch before weight lifting...it has more negative affects then posotive. You will do much more poorly when it comes to weights and reps....warming up properly is key. Static stretching several times a week is the best way to increase flexability and overall wellness....but never directly before a w/o. This is a proven fact!

we had a discussion about this a few weeks ago, opinions are fairly split on this matter....
I thought the answer was NO but a lot of people feel otherwise....

Yea I added a few helpfull posts to that...if he cares he could search and find alot more info. I added some scientific research there as well...but I'm not gonna do all the work here heh. They have to search the threads to find that out lol.

EXACLY!! Although I can admit it can be a bit overwhelming at first, searching through all the threads.

Totally outta context here deadbolt, I truly love this: Obsessed is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.

who's that from?

I should have known! Its a great quote.
I just printed that in huge freaking letters and slapped it on the wall of my gym! Maybe my friends will think twice now before they call me "an obsessed freak"...:D

thanks everyone, I did some searching (it took a while) and found the older post and artcles on this.

numerous recent studies have shown that stretching a cold muscle actually cuases a reduction of strength on the next set. stretch during and after training for increases flexibility and increased growth.

I have done the same lol when I trained at home. When I make up w/o's for friends and such I always add some quotes in the corner grids. I have a ton of favorits and when they read em it really gets em going.

Another favorite is:
Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength

stretching a cold muscle is also the best way to cause injury to yourself...

I'm glad someone posted this because I had been stretching before every workout.

Don't stretch cold muscles. As others have said, it makes injury more likely. However, stretching after a warm-up, or during and after your workout, are nothing but beneficial.
