What makes them more healthy, and a better source of carbs?

Sweet potatoes are lower gi. They are higher in fiber and nutrients and they don't cause as much of an insulin spike make them a slow burning carb.

Red skinned potatoes have a lower GI than white potatoes isn't that right?

Yes, they do.

On the same sort of note I've just bought six sweet potatoes whats the BEST way to cook them?

baked most def. to me , baking the skin actually makes the skin taste halfway decent. if your microwave the tatos, it makes the skin hard as a rock.

It does? Not when i micro them. :hmmm:

You can also peel them, cut them up (carefully) and put them in some boiling water till soft. Then either mash them (a sprtiz of pineapple juice and some splenda sweetener) and they're like a desert. If you dont wanna use the sweetener or mash them, just a little light butter, salt and pepper on top and they're great!

The skin is the best part...thats where alot of the fiber and nutrients are...I'd say eat it.

slice em up like fries, dump a little sf maple syrup and cinnamon in a ziploc bag, add fries, toss to coat, and bake em in the oven for around 15 mins or so... mmmmm good :thumb:

You think its necissary? I eat a multi for nutrients, and broccoli for fiber. Sweet potato's are for carbs.

A little extra fiber never hurt...why throw it out if its good for you...matters well just eat it. Thats my favorite part of the potato. Especially when mashed!!

Multivitamins are suppliments - which means they 'suppliment'. They don't replace. You will never get from a tablet what wholel food will offer you.

Eat the skins - they are the best bit.

the skins do taste pretty damn good.i like it better than all the other stuff.

Hi Potato fans! :wave2:

Anyone here care 2 make some Oven Baked Home-made fries?

Home-made French fries

I beg to differ. Do you have the vitiman/mineral profile of the skins(per sq inch, weight, whatever)?

What exactly are you disagreeing with?

The fact that the skin (and the part directly beneath the skin) has a lot of the fibre and a higher vitamin/mineral level? Or the part where suppliments should only be considered as a SUPPLIMENT to a good diet - and not a replacement for things you get from real food...

Im disagreeing with this: "They don't replace. You will never get from a tablet what wholel food will offer you." I dont think the vitiman/mineral content of the skin is so important to me, that it cant be replaced with my multi. And I guess unless you can pull up a profile of what the skin contains, we wont know.

And if your questioning my diet, its near perfect thanks :)

Firslty - I was talking about GENERAL diets and multivitamins - the not specifics of skins v's multi....

Secondly - No, I would not be able to tell you specifics of the nutrient loss for the skin off the top of my head (although you could determine it yourself, if you wanted to, just go to www.nutritiondata.com and compare the sweet potato WITH skin to the sweet potato WITHOUT skin). But if you want to get that defensive about the multivitamins in skin v's without I can tell you that the tablets are certainly not going to replace the fibre from the skin... There would probably be a good deal of Vit C and A in the skin as well...

BUT that is beside the point - My point was that the bioavailability of the vitamins and minerals presented in a tablet is much less than those presented in real foods. Real foods usually offer you these things in combinations that are much more useful. Also - real foods give you with a multitude of phytochemicals/other substances (eg: indols, flavinoids and a help of 'unknown' substances) that are of a huge benefit to your general health. Not to mention the fibre and water real food has - AND the psychological effects of the satiety of real foods in your stomach...

I was not questioning the specifics of YOUR diet - I was simply stating that trying to get all the vitamins/minerals and other nutrients you need from SUPPLEMENTS is sub-optimal and I think about it in a similar light to thinking that you will loose weight by eating donuts and chips while taking a thermogenic...

Sure - if you eat at a calorie defecit it might work - but it is not the best option out.
