what happens when you weight train heavy but dont consume enough calories?

you don't grow

Well then the answer should be obvious. If you're not eating enough to maintain, you won't maintain.

my problem is the 6 meals a day.
i am just starting out and only weigh 119lbs now. have a nice bench/DB setup and an elliptical, alternating days of cardio and weights. I do whey/creatine/vitamins daily..... but am only hungry twice a day!
lately i have tried fruits in the morning, but that cuts my lunchtime hunger. ack! i guess i just have to force it eh?
thanks guys

It'll take a while to get your appetite up. Are you eating smaller meals than you did before?

And who said the golden rule was 6 meals? if you had 2 before try 3, then 4...etc. More frequent smaller meals are a good idea, but if you're finding it too difficult theres nothing to say you have to jump to 6 straight away.

yeah, i guess i'm expecting too much too soon :)
i'll adjust to smaller size, upping meal number over time.

Remember, its not just about how many meals a day, though it helps to eat more, its also about total calories taken in, and about the quality of those calories.

I'd rather have 500 calories from a chicken salad than 1000 calories from fast food, yknow?

Work out what your maintenance level for calories is, and increase that by a 100-200 a day every week (so 1 week on 2000 p/day, next week 2200 p/day etc).

Once you find your meals are getting a little too big, split them up into smaller meals, but more of them.

Just one way of doing it. I assume you're trying to put on weight?

Gaining weight will be tough in the beginning especially if you aren't used to eating alot. Its hard but you have to learn to eat even when you aren't hungry. I have been eating healthy but eating alot. Most of the time when I'm eating meals i'm not really that hungry, but I just eat the food to maintain my weight.

Take Gaz's advice. He knows what he's talking about.

Depends if by "not enough" you mean "not enough to gain muscle" or "not enough to maintain".

This is exactly what you do to drop fat. Cutting = lifting heavy while not eating quite enough to maintain your entire bodyweight. The lifting risk-manages the muscle, and your body is forced to jettison and burn off bodyfat.

A few tricks:

Add a tablespoon or two of olive oil or natural peanut butter to your protein shakes.

Knock back a protein shake at bedtime, and have another one ready to go by your bed. You get up to take a leak, grab the shake, add water, chug it down, go back to bed.

Carry a bag of peanuts and dry fruit in your pocket at all times. If you're not chewing... you know what to do.

Keep shaker cups of dry protein powder in your locker. Add water and knock one back several times a day.

Built is right, striving to keep training heavy and hard while not eating enough, will most likely maintain your muscle mass and you should drop some fat that way.

If you want to gain fast, you have to eat, eat and eat, especially if you are ecto.

thanks guys :)

I would need more information to answer more accurately, but one possibility is that you would not gain any lean muscle tissue yet still increase strength via improved neural efficiency.

olive oil to a protein shake? :barf:

I do that too, just drink it straight. I don't like the idea of spreading it throughout something that takes longer to eat, unless it is pasta or something.

Wrong.

If you're not consuming more calories then you burn, and you lift weights, you'll lean out.
