I was told that not letting your gas tank get lower than 1/2 full gets you better gas mileage (and saves you money). Has anybody tried this? Does it work?

Usually on my way to work. I work far so I fill up every other day regardless of the level. This way I don't have to worry about it...

I fill up when I get really low on gas. It's almost a game to see how much I can take out of the tank before I have to refill. I have a 22 gallon tank and managed to get 21.7 something gallons in it the other day, but that includes a top off.

i would think you would get worse gas milage b/c your car is heavier when filled up, btw the difference would be, you could not tell the difference.

Filling up any sooner than when the gas light comes on is poor time management. :)

when i was in college and waited tables at the OG, i would only put $5 at a time. it was 25 miles to work. i was stoping every damn day. i became best friends with the people at the gas stations.

Don't turn on your headlamps (in the sun), leave the A/C off(if you've got it),leave off the CD, fan, anything electrical actually, and you'll save petrol{gas}.

I won't be filling up at all soon, as it's just getting rather expensive :suicide:

i the alt. and comp. will still put a load on the engine. as far as i know the alt. load will be the same, the comp. will make little difference.

A/C adds 10-12% to fuel consumption.

Headlamps too, ever noticed when you're idling and turn the lights on the engine idles slower? I've only got a metric 'estimate' , but headlamps add around 1/2 a litre more of petrol consumption per hour driven.

Maybe with those huge engines you have in the USA, this is all not noticable...........

"Use electrics less

Car electrics impose an extra load on the engine, making it work harder and burn more fuel. Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by up to ten percent in stop-go traffic. At motorway speeds, air conditioning increases fuel consumption by three to four per cent. Flow-through ventilation reduces the need to drive with air conditioning on or with windows open, both of which consume more fuel. A sun roof can reduce the need for air conditioning, but when the roof is open at motorway speeds, wind resistance is increased and greater fuel consumption will result. "

i'm not an auto tech but if the engine idles slower doesn't that mean less gas is used?

Ive heard this too.
Supposedly, keeping it above half, allows for less air to be in the tank, and therefore less pressure. Which in turn uses less gas...or something along those lines...

I almost never us a/c or lights, only when it's really dark.

i always wait until it's just barely empty, or when the light comes on and then it's off to the gas station wasting another precious 20 dollar bill.

Sorry dude, but you're on crack if you think that's true. It has been proven by AAA that using air conditioning on the highway actually SAVES gas when compared to driving with even just a a drivers side (only) window down. And that doesn't take anywhere near 10%. During stop-and-go, use your windows, as the air pressure doesn't add hardly any strain to the engine.

 how does ac lower fuel consumption on highway? :finger:
As compared to windows rolled down. The wind pressure which is added to the car (like riding on a motorcycle with your jacket only half zipped up; like a parachute, etc...) and causes extra stress on the engine, thus more fuel consumption.

No the engine is working harder, power is being taken away from the engine and is being used for the lights.

Just another example , I was commuting for 4 months, 40 minute drive twice a day. In March there was a lot of fog and grey weather (but no rain). I had the lights on all the time. I thought something was wrong with the engine as the fuel consumption was perceptively worse(there was a difference) during that period, but the engine was fine........

1/4 full keeps the sediment that's naturally in all gasoline from being pumped through your ignition system.

You hit the nail on the head. My dad is a mechanic and was just telling me about this the other day.

Doesn't the fuel filter , stop the sediment?

Try to at 1/2 tank................but mostley at 1/8 tank

That is how it was explained to me. Have you tried it? Does it work?
I was also told that...

Not true. There is no positive pressure built up in our gas tanks. Actually, it's the opposite. As we use fuel the tank lowers which in turn creates a vacuum. We've all heard the suction sound when we released our fuel caps, right? Either way the theory is not plausible as the computer regulates air fuel mixture down to a fraction.

I burn at least 40 gallons of gas a week just back and forth to work. I fill up every other day.

my b/f, and I always wait untill it hits a little before the solid line of Empty. We sometimes even wait till it's right on the solid line.

Funny story, but not at the time it happened. We were driving South on Turnpike from Orlando, FL to Miami, FL. Well, we were on a half a tank. We drove, and drove, and then realized that there wasn't a service station in site for miles. Well, lets just say we were sweating bullets.. hahaha, not really, but we were concerned. I have tripple A, but everyone knows how long they take. Anyway, with the last bit of gas, we were able to make it to a service station. Just that feeling of not knowing if we were going to make it to a service station was somewhat intense. :)

It's easier to balance my checkbook if I fill up less often - :D

if you like to keep your interior in mint condition. having the windows rolled up the majortiy of the time is also the best thing to do

umm its hard on your fuel pump to let the tank get below half full.... or half empty, depending on how you see things.

Your reasoning behind this please?
